Well, for the past 30 years I have considered the failure to develop the lakefront Cleveland's biggest downfall. I've seen many proposals during this long period, but few ever get past general concept.

I thought a couple of things in and around the article gave some insight into the difficulties getting stuff like this off the ground. First off was the really poor attendance for the presentation, second was the comment by one of the attendees about potential economic discrimination and third was all of the negativity in the comments following the article. Kind of gave you a feeling that this (like all of the others) isn't going anywhere.

It is really a shame, Cleveland needs to fix the waterfront now. Also, they need to replace Burke Airport with solid infill development, better integrating the existing downtown towards the lake.

I really wish something was going up today, instead of more outyear plans.

More good news. W. 6th Street in the Warehouse District is getting a make over:

Streetscape projects in Cleveland's Warehouse District play central role in reviving pockets of city - cleveland.com

The bottom of the article also lists the other street improvement projects of the last year, including E. 4th, E. 12th, Euclid Ave.

Also keep an eye on E.14th and Playhouse Square AND Public Square announcements in the next few months for streetscaping.

Chicago just recently got rid of their lakefront airport. I agree, Cleveland needs to do the same.

Oh yes, Meigs Field. That was in 03-04 I believe. It's ridiculous how similar Cleveland and Chicago are if you look at everything. It's just that Cleveland is a much smaller version, and is about 20 years behind Chicago as far as diversifying its economy and starting to improve.

Burke Lakefront is a lot larger than Meigs field though and not a peninsula, so I think what we need to do differently is turn just the lakefront portion into a park and develop the rest, whether it be residential or commercial/retail (not industrial). Currently it's just 2 sq miles of wasted space in an area of (if not now) soon to be in high demand.

It was all the way back in '03? Wow, I had no idea its been that long, thanks for the update lol.

And I agree, Cleveland and Chicago have a ton in common. From their development along the lake, the diversity in the population, the transit, the suburbs, the city neighborhoods, the downtowns, the way the economies have come about. Now granted, Cleveland on a smaller scale. But Cleveland is much more like Chicago than say Milwaukee which doesn't even have light rail.

Speaking of Chicago, its no longer the Sears Tower, it is now the Willis Tower. I will always call it the Sears Tower, I don't care what some company wants to do. They are trying to change Chicago's iconic landmark!!!
