Letchworth State Park is one of the best state parks in U.S., promoted as the "Grand Canyon of the East," and often is promoted as Finger Lakes destination even though it doesn't have a Finger Lake. Conesus Lake is the most western of the 11 Finger Lakes and is only 17 minutes from Letchworth. Conesus Creek, the Conesus Lake outlet, is a tributary of the Genesee River which flows through Letchworth.

Letchworth State Park, especially for fall colors, is a very worthy detour for Greater Clevelanders traveling to and from Niagara Falls.

Chautauqua Lake, especially as the home of the Chautauqua Institution, is a much more convenient and popular inland lake destination for Greater Clevelanders than the Finger Lakes.

Presque Isle in Erie arguably has the best Lake Erie beaches in the U.S. and also is a popular destination for Clevelanders.

Waldameer at the entrance to Presque Isle State Park is one of the last trolley amusement parks in the U.S. Admission and parking is free, but rides are paid for individually or with a pass.

Comparing the Finger Lakes to Lake Erie, which offers surf beaches and great expanses of water, is comparing apples and oranges.

However, I would heartily recommend the Ithaca area for its great waterfalls, Cornell University attractions, and one of the best farmers markets that I've seen in the U.S. Check out Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Parks. Adding visits to the Corning Museum of Glass and Watkin Glens State Park, offers a wonderful vacation opportunity.
