What's new that I have to see in Cleveland in June? (Lorain: how much, house)

I'll be in town June 1 for my biannual visit to Cleveland. What's new, worth visiting, worth seeing, worth eating, worth checking out, no matter how big or small?
(Especially pre-exisiting stuff that got improved upon)
Amazing how much stuff changes in 6 months to a year in Cleveland area.

There are two places on this list I definitely want to check out: Pins Mechanical and the House of Creole, the latter because I'm a big fan of Cajun and Creole cuisine. If you're a country music lover, you'll likely want to check out "Welcome to the Farm" in the East Flats.

Have you ever checked out the rhododendron gardens at Holden Arboretum? They'll be in full bloom on June 1, and this is one of the top garden attractions at Holden.

Afterwards, perhaps visit other nearby attractions which you may have missed:


1) The Kirtland Temple, which also has an interesting small museum.

2) Lake Metroparks Penitentiary Glen and its wildlife center (if open).

3) Headland Dunes State Nature Reserve. Park at the eastern end of the large Mentor Headlands State Beach parking lot.

5) Perhaps dine at Brennan's Fish House in Grand River for fried yellow perch or walleye, or check out the Pompadour in Fairport Harbor, then go the Fairport Harbor Creamery for a "boozy ice cream" dessert. Perhaps the Finnish Heritage Museum or the Fairport Marine Museum and Light House might be open.

^ i've been to House of Creole, Pins Mechanical, and Welcome to the Farm. I would skip House of Creole honestly, was very underwhelmed. I would frankly be surprised if it lasts a few years. Battiste and Dupree remains the unchallenged best Cajun in Cleveland. But if you want the atmosphere, Bourbon Street Barrel Room is way better than House of Creole in all ways.

I guess I'm glad Pins is there and it's an impressive place, but it's very expensive and the wait times are way too long for what it is. It's really popular though at least early on so that is good. But I don't feel the need to be there too often. I've been there twice with friends. I'd recommend going to ABC next door first to save money.

Many people don't like country music, in which case you will not like Welcome to the Farm, but I enjoyed my time there. There is nowhere else you can go and hear popular country in that atmosphere wit heveryone singing along in Cleveland. And it gets packed! The bands they have are pretty skilled. Attracts people from all over the region.

Edit: I searched battiste and dupree after posting this and it looks like it is closed for good now, much to my distress.

The new bridge is must safer and not subject to the flooding that plagued the old valley, low-level bridge, but it certainly detracts from the Lake Metroparks that inhabit the valley over which the new bridge is built.


Here's the old bridge, which required steep descents into the valley, often a treacherous stretch of road during winter. It also could be shut for as much as a week or more due to flooding.


Vrooman Road Bridge - Bridges and Tunnels


With Vrooman Road an emergency escape route in the event of a disaster at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant, it was decided a high level bridge was necessary. The old bridge fit the landscape much better and will be missed by those who remember it and have the tales to tell about driving the old Vrooman Road.

^bjimmy mentioned Pins Mechanical which is a good choice. Lots of energy, tons of games, craft beer and other drinks (NOTE: they don't serve food but welcome carry-ins from other restaurants, of which there are plenty in the area). Very large, attractive 2-level space, with
mezzanine/open floor view to the basement level; cool architecture... Lots of TVs with sports and seating areas; duck-pin bowling, old-fashioned pinball and lots more...Family-friendly by day but no kids after 8p. Weekend crowds bring lots of juice but wait times for drinks and games can be a pain.

I would say Ohio City in general. The Market Square area has been growing in popularity, esp in the last decade, but it is reaching explosive levels on weekends. Also the huge INTRO apt/mixed-use complex at the corner of W.25 & Lorain Aves is just coming online, with a new restaurant and coffee bar soon to open, and other street-level retail openings.

Northern Ohio-City along Detroit Ave from W. 25 to around W. 32nd (in the Hingetown area) is visually striking esp with the Quarter block-long mixed-use apts/over retail and the visually interesting Church-State modular apt tower. The residential streets here, and really all over Ohio City, are chocked with quirky, historic, and ultra-mod housing.

The OC is definitely the trendiest of trendy Cleveland neighborhoods these days. And its restaurant, bar and entertainment vibe is seriously challenging Cleveland's traditional downtown just across the Flats/Cuyahoga River valley. It is practically a 2nd downtown. And, of course, OC is very transit-friendly with the Red Line Rapid stopping near the Market Square core and a slew of bus lines (along with the Rapid) connecting to downtown along with every West Side neighborhood and a bunch of western suburbs ... and the Airport.

Goma on East 4th St. sounds excellent if you enjoy sushi or Japanese food in general.

Second night in town, went out to Elyria and went to Unplugged craft brewery. A true startup in a town that could sure use some hipness. Highly impressed.
My second night in NE Ohio, I'm here all month. Should be fun.

Agreed!

I work in Elyria and that's my go to spot.

Did you notice the waterfall behind the brewery? Black River is very underrated.
