For the original poster: Winters can be rough but are handled well here. Streets are cleaned quickly for the most part and drivers know how to drive in it. Outside, the worst part is a blustery day with the wind blowing off the lake. Can make an average snowstorm feel like a blizzard. I personally like the seasons here. Autumn is my favorite.

Default willing to help someone else...?

I have just been offered an internship at the NASA Glenn Research Center. I will be there for 18 months, sent somewhere else for a rotation, then back to Glenn.

I would like to rent in nice quiet area where I generally don't have to worry about my wife and 2 boys (3 yrs and 10 months). I currently live in a suburb of Cincinnati and when told friends and family that we were considering moving to Cleveland they referred to it as "the armpit of Ohio". I know that every city has its rough areas and every city has its gems as well.

When we get back to Glenn after the rotation we want to buy a house and school quality will be a premium, probably our number one factor.

Since I'm fresh out of college I will be making decent money but not enough to go crazy. My early research says Westlake is out of our budget. I want something nice, affordable and with a quick commute to Glenn.

Thanks for any advice and perspective you have to offer.

That's funny. Armpit of Ohio? I've always seen Cleveland's surrounding area to be much more appealing in looks and quality of life compared to Cinci! So I can't really understand that one much at all. There are some nice areas in Fairview that may be appealing to you close to Glenn. Some others you may want to look into may be North Olmsted or Rocky River. I don't really know your budget or I'd suggest other places. But Westlake is pricier for the area around Glenn.

I always heard Toledo referred to as the "armpit of Ohio" - guess Ohio has 2 armpits in some people's opinions!

yeah "mistake on the lake" i've heard as well. We are going to spend the weekend in Cleveland and will be driving around getting a feel for the neighborhoods.

We don't want to spend more than $1000/month on rent.

Westlake seemed to be outside of that but I think we have found a few places that seemed to be a right balance (on paper at least).

Maybe try Rocky River, North Olmsted or North Ridgeville. There is a lot of places close to Nasa Glenn/Hopkins that I think youd be very happy with, and some are very affordable. Westlake is one of the wealthier areas but there are cheaper places that are nice to, some of which I mentioned.
