South Euclid
My young wife and child were looking to relocate. I recently started working in Cleveland on Chester Ave., but I am driving in all the way from Ravenna. A lady I work with mentioned that S. Euclid had good schools and was a decent area to live in. We were house hunting this last Saturday and found a house that we fell in love with that is in our price range. However, on doing further research I noticed that even though it is in 'South Euclid' that the zip was 44118 which puts it in Cleveland/University Heights. This house is located just 3 houses west of Warrensville road which seems to be the cut off point for S. Euclid schools. Does anyone know for certaintity which school system my 5 yr old would be entering? I did some research on Cleveland/University Heights schools and they don't seem to be all that bad. I am just worried about violence towards my son as he would be a minority in that school system as he is white. I know that K-5 I really wouldn't have to worry to much about my son. I do think that he will be able to do some Higher Learning courses as he seems to be quite gifted but that remains to be seen. I'd love some feed back about whether I should keep looking or not. I will be calling the school board on Monday to find out for sure what school district he would fall in.

Yep, that area is most certainly in the CH-UH school district (which I generally don't think is any better or worse than South Euclid-Lyndhurst School District). Specifically, I'm also pretty sure if you live in that area, your children would be attending Gearity Elementary School K-5th and then Wiley 6th-8th.
Here's my feeling on the whole situation: During the younger years, I don't think you have to worry about violence towards your child for any reason. If you end up living in that area, your child should be just fine going through the schools up through elementary school. After that, it's a bit of a crapshoot. Forget about Cleveland Heights High School, its best days are in its past. So if you went for a home in that area, you realistically can't or don't want to live there for more than 8 or 9 years at most, unless you're willing to consider a private high school.
If you have any other questions, ask away. I'm very familiar with the area. You should take a look at the Mayfield area. It's not as close to your job as South Euclid is, but it's still significantly closer than Ravenna. Mayfield (Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Highland Heights) has very affordable homes and a pretty good school district (better than CH-UH and SE-L, for certain).

So are you saying that SE-L schools are not the greatest either? I had heard good things about it and that was why I was trying to target that area. You said the same thing that my mother did about school, she grew up in the area and went to a catholic school and had no troubles and a great education. I guess my main concern is the area I am living being safe. Is the area just west of warrensville road considered part of South Euclid? I heard the South Euclid police don't mess around which is what I like to hear. My only concern is the price of the a private school. However, I will be finishing my Bachelor's soon and hopefully climbing the corporate ladder and increaseing my salary by the time my son would start high school. Who knows, he might be good enough to go to St. Ingnatius(sp). My friend that lives in the area says that the school system isn't violent but its the ciriculum and lack of parenting that affects the kids the most. I plan on being an active member of the PTA and local community. I love enriching children and teaching how to be productice, respectful members of their communities. I used to coach 7-9 yr old baseball in my home town and I was only 16 myself. It was so much fun.

Unfortunatley my price range tops off at 100k right now. However, my realtor just got back to me informing me that the house in question was sold already. I will keep looking in South Euclid as my friend lives there and loves it and she has a small child as well.

I would recommend South Euclid. The neighborhood you mentioned is CH-UH school district. My child currently attents this school district (Oxford). The district's been getting a bad rep lately, but from my experience, it seems more an issue of uninvolved parents than a lack of effort by the staff. My wife and I went to a PTA funtion this past winter and were shocked to see only about 10 other parents there for a school with over 300 students! Kind of depressing.
SEL schools have the same issue. I really don't believe it's the schools; rather a lack of parental involvement. Your child would be fine attending SEL schools. Before moving to Cleveland Hts, we looked at several homes in South Euclid; generally very nice and quiet neighborhoods. Plus it's convenient to most nearby ammenities.
Good luck with your search!

If you are looking to live in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst school district, I would say make sure your son doesn't have to go to Lowden. Otherwise, he should be fine. However, the school district is bleeding money so they're changing the schools around.
South Euclid is a safe area but becoming increasingly ghetto. I wouldn't be worried about violence towards your son til he reaches 10, that's when the serious fights in school start. There's also at least two Catholic elementary schools you can put your son in - St. Claire's and St. Gregory's. I'm not sure if they go from K-6 or K-8. Basically, your kid should be fine in the school district for elementary school, but get him out starting in 5th grade. If you can financially swing it, perhaps University School or Hawken would be a good option.
You should definitely be able to find a house in your price range on the East Side.
