Shaker Heights is a really nice area. But it can be expensive. I would look into the Brecksville area or Seven Hills, Sagamore Hills, or Independence. All these suburbs are cheaper and they are smaller. Shaker Heights is a great suburb. Some have called it "world class" but it is growing by leaps and bounds. The smaller suburbs i have listed are safe, not as expensive, and not far from the Cuyahoga Metro Parks or the Cuyahoga Nat'l Park. Those places if you have not been to are great areas to hang outside and spend a weekend not far from city and suburban life. I love the Cleveland area. I moved here from Pittsburgh and its awesome. I will be happy to answer more questions you have. Good Luck with what you decide to do.

I would stay away from Shaker Heights. It was once a wonderful area but has declined significantly in recent years...high crime and such. I'll agree that Sagamore Hills, Brecksville, Independence areas are terrific. Another great spot is Chagrin Falls/ Bainbridge area. I gre up there and it's stunning... a quaint little town-safe, great schools, etc. If I didn't have such a strong desire to leave Ohio-we'd buy a home there for sure! Good luck!

Places to live near Cleveland
For 750 a month rent or 125,000 for a home you will only be able to live well in Parma,Parma heights, Lakewood, Brooklyn,Fairview Park, North Olmsted or Rocky River. With only 125,000 to spend on a home, you would be forced to live in the older suburbs that directly border Cleveland. You cant live in Brecksville, Indepenedence, Seven Hills or Sagamore hills for any of those amounts you mentioned. My suggestion is to live in Medina or even better yet Lorain county, the commute is about 45 minutes and you can get much more for your money. The eastern suburbs that border the county line are equally safe but much more expensive. Most people in the area say that the area west of the Cuyahoga River lacks culture, but most agree that if safety is your concern you cant beat it.

Shakers heights is pretty safe. Taxes are a little hight but it is a nice area. No offense but you may need a little more than 125 thousand. Shaker Heights area is kept up pretty well.

I would say that North Shaker Heights would be a good bet, but southern Cleveland Heights or even University Heights would be more affordable, near Shaker and just as safe. You should also look at an apartment near Shaker Square there is a nice vintage shopping center called Shaker square and it has direct aaaccess to the Greenline of the Cleveland Rapid Transit area. The outer suburbs mentioned are nice and safe and have reliable bus service but all of those towns are a further drive and are kind of bland in comparison to Shaker Heights which has an urban side, but is truly a garden suburb full of mature trees grand homes and good transit options. The southside has a little more crime but nothing to be overly alarmed about.

Shaker is a very nice unique "urban" suburb. The other suburbs mentioned except for Chagrin Falls lack any character. They are defnitiely suburban, are non-pedestrian friendly and sprawl happy.
The downside are the costs of living in Shaker, but most of the city is relatively safe and it offers stunning architecture.
