Those are reasons why people are so down about Cleveland. I think Cleveland is a great place though, and every place has its problems. Cleveland is constantly getting bashed by all these reports coming out saying that we are the dirtiest, most dangerous cities, highest dropout...and all the rest. All our sports teams get good but we never win the whole thing and that is a big part of it.
I love Cleveland and I always will though. We are just kind of going through bad times right now and hopefully in the near future things will start to improve. Cleveland is still a very livable place though, even in the city of Cleveland and almost all the surrounding suburbs and cities. I just wish Cleveland would start to improve again and we would be the place to be like Miami or LA or some place like that.

I wouldn't want Cleveland to be 'the place to be' like Miami and LA...
LA has highways twelve lanes across (six in each direction)... In Miami, there is heavy traffic all hours of the day and night...
Too many people in both places, Imo...
We could use a few more people, though...
So, to the OP (original poster) welcome to Cleveland!

20 years ago, I was only 11, so I wasn't paying much attention to Cleveland at the time, outside of what I saw on the evening news. But I've seen pictures from the early-mid 80's, and downtown Cleveland looked bleak compared to how it looks today.

I live in an inner ring suburb of Cleveland...
One Friday night (a little after midnight, actually, so early Saturday morning), I was at my computer, and there was a loud vehicle rolling down the street... All of a sudden, I heard a crash, and when I turned on the light outside, I saw someone had dumped a whole can of trash, and the trashcan, on my treelawn...
I called the police department on their non-emergency number, and reported the incident... The dispatcher said she would send someone out...
Within 10 minutes, there was an officer outside... I had picked up the trash and put it in the bin already, so I showed him the trash can. He proceeded to pick through it until he found an address on some discarded mail, and put the bin in his squad car, and drove off....
I was very impressed...

It's almost as though Cleveland is against progression. More and more things keep shutting down, and then they just leave them there.
The flats needs a major renovation, all the unfunctional steel mills need to be torn down.
Oh, and most of the east side should just be picked up and dumped into lake erie.
Then perhaps build a wild life sanctuary where it was. lol.
Seriously though, my wife had never been to Ohio before, and when I took her to cleveland to meet my family, she was like "Ewww, why are there so many run down industrial plants?"
That's the stuff Cleveland needs to take care of, because that's what everyone sees when coming up 77 north.

Wow, on a Friday night? What neighborhood was this where they responded so quickly to someone dumping on your treelawn?

Cleveland is a great city.. We need to compete with other major cities and get 1 or 2 casinos. People go gamble in other states when that money can be spent here. The crime rate is crazy but there are reasons like any other place. I have lived here 25 years and hope that it will change for the better.... It starts with city hall and the scandles dont help our poularity none either

I don't mind gambling, and I wouldn't mind gambling being allowed in places like Thistledown (which would enhance the race track).
But I don't think casinos are a panacea...
We need to create an environment that encourages big business to set up shop here, and right now we don't have that, compliments of our politicians...

I completely agree that we should have casinos in Ohio. Especially in and around Cleveland. We lose millions of dollars to other states because we have no casinos here. Its not a miracle, Detroit is a good example of that, but it does help a little. I also think it would attract people and bring jobs.

I love to go up to Seneca Casino in NY or Greek Town in Detroit. There's a fairly new casino that is supposed to be beautiful on the shores of Lake Michigan, on the southwest Michigan side. I'm not sure what its called at the moment though. That's my next trip. We go about 4 times a year to play Hold'Em. I wish there a casino closer. Although the Charity Poker on the west bank of the flats does seem to hold me over some. And the poker nights for charity at the churches. Hey, as long as it's for charity gambling is allowed, right?

Ahhh..that explains it. Parma Hts/Parma police are very good from what I hear. I wish they'd come over and teach the CPD a thing or two.
