I am in graduate school at CSU and I am enjoying it.
I would not go to undergrad there, particularly coming from CA. In fact, I wouldn't really go to undergrad anywhere in Cleveland (Case, John Carrol, CSU). They are more commuter schools (with JC being the least "commuter"). I would look at Ohio St and any of the MAC schools - Ohio, Miami, Akron, Kent. There are other, smaller liberal arts schools that are good, but mostly private so probably not affordable.

CSU is horrible...
Cleveland State is quite possibly the worst public university in the state, and one of the worst 4 year schools in the country. Why would you want to leave CA to come to east Cleveland, and be in class with a bunch of inner city trash who barely made it through high school? The avg. SAT score is well below 1000 for entering students.
For undergraduate, I'd say Miami U. is the best state school, and Ohio U. isn't bad either. Ohio State is good, but you won't receive much attention there, you'll just be a student number and paycheck to the university, while you're being taught by graduate students over half the time. But OSU is great for grad-level work. Kent, Akron, Toledo, Cincinnati, and Bowling Green are nowhere near as good as Miami or OSU, but they're still better than Cleveland State.
Why the hell would you want to leave CA? The UC system isn't good enough for you? At least CA invests in education, unlike OH, which would rather save the jobs of 200 steel workers than improve their public universities. Plus the weather in Cleveland sucks from November through May.

LOL! Spoken like a true Clevelander...but probably a bit too harsh.
I think I'm a pretty well educated guy and I went there for undergraduate and graduate. Perfect? Of course not. It was what was available to me at the time. But I had several damn fine profs when I was there(early 90s), from Harvard, Oxford and Yale.
I would also say that certain programs are considerably stronger than others.
If you want to learn, you can get a good education anywhere.

Very well said. I believe CSU has a very strong law program as a matter of fact.

It ought to be. They're surrounded by plenty of urban mistakes to learn from
Seriously though, NE Ohio has a plethora of good schools. Most of them are private however, and not state-run. The advantage to that is, out-of-state tuition is a non factor (they charge the same for everyone).
Case Western Reserve, John Carroll and Baldwin-Wallace are all noted schools in the immediate Cleveland area. Hiram, Heidelberg, Mount Union, Oberlin and Wooster are further out a-ways.
As far as state schools, I agree with the poster who mentioned U. of Akron. They have some very strong programs, and when I hear "psychology" that's one of the places I tend to think of.

I've lived in Northern Wayne County for about 14 years now, and I have to say its not a bad place to live at all. I'm originally from Cleveland, but my family moved here when I was a kid. I also lived in North Canton while in College (Also nice, but certainly not rural anymore) Wayne/Southern Medina County is a very peaceful, safe place to live. Most of the people are nice, schools are very good or even top notch, and I can even accidentally leave my house unlocked when I go somewhere and not have to worry about a thing.
Yes, the winters can be dull sometimes, I guess you just have to be creative...As a kid I had a great time sledding, snowboarding, and missing school for snow days =)
I guess I just see it as worth it considering it gives us green rolling hills, lots of parks that include streams, ponds and lakes to enjoy in the spring summer...not to mention the trees changing colors in the fall. I know I'm partial, but I love the thick scent of leaves in october, going on hay rides and picking a garden full of pumpkins as a kid.
Jobwise, its not exactly a booming mecca, but hey, if your smart and know where to look, you'll find something. I found a good job in Orrville actually.
Shopping is pretty good in Wayne and Medina (if your willing to drive 15-20 min.) I can't speak for Holmes though, don't visit often enough.
And your not far from Cleveland either (1-2 hours), so driving up on a weekend is always an option if you need a brief change of pace, after which you can return home to the country. Catch an Indians, Cavs, Browns game, go to the Rock Hall, Great Lakes Science Center, or fishing on Lake Erie and be home before bed time.
No, its not perfect, and I know I'm biased, but you could do alot worse.

I am confused by this quote--whoever the "new" president is has done wonders for the university for what it used to be in the ten years beforehand.
Off the top of my head for new improvement for the university:
- New gorgeous rec center
- Fenn tower renovation into dorms
- New barnes and noble bookstore storefront on Euclid
- New administrative building fronting Euclid adding to the streetscape
- New restaurant on Euclid "Elements" (besides the other eating storefronts of raschal house,
- New renovations on a few building fronts of the academic buildings to make them better line up with Euclid (Law, Science?)
- 1900 Euclid ave apartments discounts to college kids
- Trolley system that links it to downtown
Future
- New master plan of more dorms and "college town"
- New student center construction beginning next year
- Euclid Corridor linking CSU to Downtown, Cleveland Clinic, and University Circle.
- More new campus buildings better integrating the street and campus (Visual and Performing Arts Center, college of education)
- Expansion of the Convo is in the master plan as well
