mrkool, I take Nub703 at his or her word and to her (or him). And as a lifelong Dem and (current) Indepedent, I extend a hearty welcome aboard... It's ashame, as one pundit noted, that since SElection 2000, Democrats and Republicans have gone from partisans to enemies. There's palpable hate these days. I've seen lovers split; families and lifelong friend stop speaking because one has gone 'to the other side.' Given the circumstances of the horrible economy and the Republicans being in power, which hurts McCain, McCain's indecisiveness on issues and his horrible choice of mental lightweight, Sarah Palin, I wonder why it's so difficult to see more honest Republicans decide to cross over to Obama. I think it's the terrible outgrowth of total intollerance of the otherside which breeds a 'my party right or wrong' mentality among the citizens.
Can we ever progress w/ such a mentality, particularly in such difficult times both domestically and abroad?

Lifelong Republican for Obama/Biden
"I never submitted th whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself" ~ Thomas Jefferson
People tend to lose their individualism when they join a particular political party. If you are a Democrat, you must side completely with the Democratic party, or you will be scrutinized. If you are a Republican, you must side with the Republican party, or you will be scrutinized.
Party loyalty should not trump rational judgment.
Kathleen Parker, Conservative Columnist, recently stated: "Anyone who dares express an opinion that runs counter to the party line will be silenced [or scrutinized]. That doesn't sound American to me, but Stalin would approve." She goes on to say "that the result when people place a higher value on party loyalty rather than the loyalty to bedrock principles and find it necessary to label individuals with a different point of view as traitors shows that we have moved beyond discourse and into the realm of placing all freedoms at risk."
It is beyond all comprehension how anyone could vote for such a weak Republican ticket, in the name of party loyalty. I believe it's time to rise above party loyalty and do what our conscience tells us is best for our nation.
I used to think like some of you, hard line Republican, blinded by party loyalty. Wake up people! The GOP has been crapping on us for the last seven plus years, but many of you are so blinded by party loyalty that you can't see the big picture.
My loyalty is not to the Republican party or the Democratic party, but to the United States of America.

Oh, and of course, liberal blogs such as the DailyKos and Huffington Post are full of wonderful tolerance... I have a sudden urge to sing Kum By Yah and open my wallet to pay higher taxes...

That's why he sold himself out for the GOP nomination and pandered to the wingnuts, right?

Obama hasnt a lick of any executive experience and a whole 5 years as a Senator. There are about a million more people more qualified for the most important job in the world, including John McCain.
He wants to tax the rich and etc, etc.
I ask you this...
Have you ever worked for a poor man? And would you want to?

I agree with most of your post, but take exception to the point about the Republicans being in power. The Democrats have been in power for the last two years. Bush is the President, as boneheaded as he is, but usually when one talks of a party "being in power," they mean the Congress and Senate.

Make that almost four years as a Senator - he was elected to the US Senate in November of 2004 with 70% of the vote.
Just settin' things straight.

Thanks for the clarification. So 4 years in a Senate and now he's qualified to run the greatest country in the world? Unbelievable.
