You should be looking at the suburbs of Youngstown. The southern suburbs are almost exactly between the two cities. You'll be looking at around 1 hour 15 minute commute to both Bedford and the middle of Pittsburgh. Canfield, Boardman, and Poland are all excellent places to live and very safe areas. The schools are all rated excellent (if that is a factor) and it is one of the most affordable places to live in the country.
The turnpike is easily accessible just south of Boardman (the fastest way to Pittsburgh) and OH-11 between Boardman and Canfield or I-680 between Boardman and Poland can take you north towards I-80 and Cleveland (this is faster than getting on the turnpike south of Boardman.)
Boardman is the most developed of the three suburbs with a mall and many dining and shopping destinations, but Poland and Canfield have several stores as well. There is a new YMCA in the southern part of Boardman that is a popular with people of all ages.
My mother commutes from Boardman to Chardon everyday and it's about the same distance as Bedford and Pittsburgh, so it is definitely doable if you don't mind 2 1/2 total hours of commute time a day.

Nice city half way between Bedford and Pitt
Let me offer you a small town that is just about the half way point between Bedford and Pittsburgh. Its actually my hometown. Its a small little town called McDonald. Its has very good schools and is a great place to raise a family. Obviously you can do more research and see if its what you are looking for. Just thought Id offer my 2cents.

The suburbs of youngstown are great. I have lived in Boardman and in Poland for many years and commuted for jobs in both Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
