Young Professional Moving to CLE from DC
Hello Everyone:
My wife and I (late 20s) are moving from DC to CLE and we're looking for a good neighborhood (rental- house, town home or apt). Ideal place would be good neighborhood to walk around in (tree lined streets, parks etc) and lots of nice restaurants. We lived in Wrigleyville in Chicago for a while- so something like that would be ideal. Would like to stay w/in 30 min commute to downtown. I've browsed through the discussion on this forum and it looks like Shaker Heights, UnivHeights and S. Euclid are the top recommendations. A few questions:
1. Is Univ. Heights the same thing or part of Univ Circle?
2. Is S. Euclid a neighborhood by itself like Shaker?
3. what is the best place/way to find rentals (other than craigslist)?
Thanks

Hook up with a Realtor, they have access to rentals. I am the mortgage person in a Real Estate office, if you would like the name of a realtor who can help you please let me know, I can hook you up.

Ohio City and Tremont (both Cleveland neighborhoods) are great to walk around and have terrific restaurants. They are a little grittier than Wrigleyville though. You might like Cleveland Heights (an inner ring suburb) near Cedar Lee, Coventry, or Cedar Fairmont districts. University Heights (it's own town) and University Circle (part of Cleveland)are two different communities a few miles apart. University Heights and S. Euclid are nice enough inner ring suburbs, but are more suburban and may not have all the walking and cafe life you may want. pluggedincleveland has rental listings and urbanohio.com has a good relocation guide and lots of free advise. Welcome!

Clevelandgal: i've heard that crime is a problem w/ Ohio city and tremont. I looked at their city web site and only saw a handful of restaurants. I came across Lakeowood in my research. Anyone have any thoughts about that?

if you look in tremont stay east of W.14th st. and north of I490, that area of tremont is like a "hip village" in the city.

No, University Heights is a proper city bordering Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, & South Euclid. John Carroll University is located there, but generally it is a bedroom community. Some apartments and a fair amount of duplexes. Very little like Wrigleyville.
2. Is S. Euclid a neighborhood by itself like Shaker?
Neither SE nor Shaker are neighborhoods. They are both proper cities. Being young I would not recommend S.Euc. And I prob. wouldnt recommend Shaker unless you lived in Shaker square. I say go to Cleveland Heights (cheaper rent, more young people) or if West Side, Tremont or Lakewood. (same as CL H).
Good luck.

Where will you work? Without knowing that, I would say Tremont should be your starting point. It's the closest thing we have to Wrigleyville and the best neighborhood for restaurants. No matter what official maps say, Tremont for your purposes is north of I-490 and east of I-71/I-90. Tremonter.com might be a useful website for you.

Will be working downtown. I'm starting to settle on the warehouse district. Any thoughts?
