Cleveland construction worker screams help
Greetings, I am another construction worker laid off recently by this crisis like many others,However, Im haveing a very hard time coping.I used to be involved in everything from selling drugs to violent gangs and all about revenge for every stupid thing.(on a serious level) Ive been to prison twice,so i do have a record as a fighter never a thief. I changed my life around 10 yrs ago, went to school ,and never could land a job in the white collar jobs because once I did no matter what, my past came a knocken, so i got involved in construction, they call me animal cuz I have no off switch! I work DAMN hard and am often told this (even by strangers) Ive busted my ass to get my high school sweetheart off heroin (the hardest thing I ever did) I got our daughter back ,I bought a nice home in the country where i spend all my extra time working, putting up fences, splitting wood you name it, anything to keep on the right path. And now I cant find any work! I meaN THE LOCAL FIRE CHIEF SAW ME WORKING AND OFFERED ME A JOB! till he found out my past! I need an honest chance damnit! I got a class a cdl (went to school for that to when i had time) honor roll , I do sanitary sewer work,tunneling,bridgework,watermains,ironwork...An d now I stand to loose it all!! I never stop until im told (lunch etc..) AND MOVE LIKE A MARINE ON DOUBLE DUTY! did i mention i am willing to crawl thru hell itself for my family & freinds? ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED

Saltydog!
Major Kudos for turning your life around. Please don't give up.
I'll keep my eyes and ears peeled. If anything comes along, I'll send you an email.
Also . . . consider posting a "Job Wanted" ad on Craigslist. Reiterate the above to people. Something will come along.
Sending you positive thoughts:-)

My husband is in the same position that you are in, and has a slightly similar past, he got laid off from construction a few weeks ago (he is now a carpenter) and he was going crazy until he was asked by a neighbor about repainting some rooms in thier rental property so they could rent it out to new tenants. Since then, he has been working eveyday on something. Fixing sinks, painting, gutter cleaning...now people are calling like crazy since they know he now has the time to do the work.
Maybe you could start your own business doing side jobs until something turns up. Make fliers, post them EVERYWHERE, make business cards, (there is a website that makes free business cards and mails them to you quickly). Also, word of mouth travels fast. People need quality work, and don't have the money to pay large companies. We are in Cincinnati and my husband has been steady with work for the past few weeks, and it doesn't look like it will slow down.

They are going construction mad in the Southwest...Texas, New Mexico, Arizona...their local labor pool leaves a lot to be desired, Salty Dog would be a big fish in a small pond out there. Skilled folks from the east are gold out there...
