Honestly both are pretty bad, but if I were you I would go with moving to Akron. I lived in a suburb close to Cleveland and that was pretty bad. There was just a lot of people roaming around late at night and making a lot of noise. It gets pretty old. A relative works in Downtown, Akron and he says that it can be bad but it's not as bad as Cleveland.

That's odd; I thought this thread was about architecture

Oh! I see, it's a crime thread!

Default The obvious relationship between Crime and Architecture

While there is little doubt among the over-educated, the unwashed masses still question the ivory tower wisdom that: a lack of/overabundance of "tall" buildings increases/decreases crime in a given area at a given time.

Although, there is an "interesting" debate brewing on wether installing extremely expensive and "Euro" looking bus shelters would cut down on the incidence of crime, increase it or simply add to the "happiness quotient" in the surrounding area, which perhaps could lead to in-observable consequences that inadvertently lead to increases/decreases in "crime" (depending of course, on your cultural/ethnocentric definition of the term, "crime").

I hope that clears up any confusion that anyone may have had about the obvious relationship between Crime and Architecture. (now, I'm going to soak my head)

Thumbs up One final note

Perhaps the real question here is which way will renewal of a court house downtown or constructing several very expensive and "Euro" looking bus/train shelters push the slide rule: toward more crime or toward less crime?

The difficulties in this measure are myriad:
~For some criminals an increase in happiness will get them out of their inertia and into the street, thereby resulting in more crime.
~For other criminals, an increase in happiness will make them too giddy to hit anyone, maliciously, thereby resulting in a decrease in crime.
~Some criminals will use the new Euro-shelters as bait for stupid airheads who think: it's pretty, so it must be safe!
~Some criminals will see these shelters as a slap in the face, because they feel needy. Perhaps, the "unintended consequence" here will be to create more crime/civil unrest in the face of expensive, inefficient and superficial public transportation projects and "no jobs."

No doubt many will think I'm crass in waiting so long to discuss the obvious connection between expensive Euro looking bus/train shelters and Eating Disorders among our female population. Well, I don't want to seem insensitive, but, well, I suppose if viewing these shiny new shelters puts a smile on some emaciated young girls face, then maybe it will have a positive impact on Eating Disorders. You know, if we can save just one, then the 168.4 million dollars will have been worth it!

The original post asked about Akron vs Cleveland. I realize the post was over a year ago, but I've lived both places. Sorry, but I hated Akron, and actually felt less safe there. While I met many nice people of all races and economics, a lot of folks seemed to have a crazier edge than I've seen in Cleveland. A lot of drug and alcohol abuse. One thing I was impressed with in Akron is that people were less bigoted than in Cleveland and other areas. Their public transportation system was good, too.

Neither of the cities is doing that good. Akron had a high number of homicides last year (higher than average, 27 It think). However Cleveland is only twice as big and had 135. Obviously Cleveland is worse and all the stats and most the people will tell you that but there not really that different. They both have big improvements to make.

Oh, Cleveland is a GREAT city to live in... NOT

[SIZE=2] CLEVELAND (AP) - A group of teenagers beat a homeless man to death as passers-by slowed to watch the attack, some of which was caught on videotape, police said.
Anthony Waters, 42, suffered a lacerated spleen and broken ribs during the attack Wednesday night and died at a hospital, police said.
"The pack mentality going on in the city of Cleveland must end," police Commander Calvin Williams said Thursday at a news conference where he urged the attackers to come forward.
Portions of the attack were caught on a surveillance camera outside a towing company on the city's east side. Police said the videotape shows passing cars slowing to watch three teens attack Waters until he staggered into the parking lot, where he was assisted by employees of the towing company.
"It was just horrifying the way he looked," said Marlo Massey, Waters' sister, who saw her brother's body after the attack. "They beat him to death and I just can't stop thinking what was on his mind while it was happening."
Waters suffered from blunt abdominal trauma, a head injury and damaged internal organs, the Cuyahoga County coroner said.
The attackers, who appeared to be between the ages of 14 to 17, robbed Waters of a music player and headphones, police said. No arrests have been made.
Waters was a welder by trade but had been staying at a Cleveland-area homeless shelter, said Paul Eadeh, a friend.
"He's a good guy, a hardworking person," Eadeh said. "He was just trying to make some money to eat and to live."
Eadeh said Waters worked odd jobs for him at a beverage store.

My Way News - Police say teens beat homeless Ohio man to death

I would take Akron over Cleveland any day of the week (although there are more things to do in Cleveland, but there are also more people in Cleveland therefore the crime rate is higher)

The nice thing about living in your home town is that you know where all the scary stuff is. When you relocate, you get to find all that stuff out through "experience!"
