While there certainly bad areas in Cleveland... Have you ever been to the Bronx or parts of LA?

I have. I lived in the BX. Cleveland is worse. Actually, NYC had about 3-4 times more murders then Cleveland.. yet the population is 20 times larger. If that is any indication of the crime in Cleveland - you will understand. In general, LA is pretty safe. Cleveland is comparable to Compton in crime for So Cal. In terms of looks.. Cleveland is disgusting for the most part. It's more impoverished than LA or Bronx and the abandoned houses show for it.

NY and LA are kind of hard to compare with Cleveland because the population is so much larger. LA and NYC both contain many wealthy neighborhoods while Cleveland has barely any. It is true that the crime overall and especially homicide rate is much much higher in Cleveland than in NYC and LA.
Ive also been to the Bronx several times, seen almost the entire south bronx. I first went there in 92 and it looked horrible, much worse than now, but even then it had improved a lot from the 70s and 80s. The Bronx by itself has a poverty rate similar to Cleveland and crime is generally the same. However the Bronx is the worst borough in NY. The other 4 are all much better than the Bronx, and Cleveland.

Oh yeah.. back in in the early 90s, NYCs crime was unmatched though. It was absolutely horrible! There are actually some decently nice parts of the Bronx though.

The thing that doesn't make any sense is people take these lists as gospel. Certain cities, I beleive including Chicago and others don't submit their crime information and therefore are left off the list, and with Chicago currently being the murder capital of the U.S. this would push Cleveland further down the list. I'm just saying it's not an even playing field.

chicago is not even close to being the u.s. "murder-capital". its usually in the top 3 cities for the highest number of murders though. big difference.

If you read any paper outside of the PD you would see this dubious distinction again and again. Here's one.. It's not per capita but overall most murders.

Chicago Beats New York, Los Angeles In Murders
Police Supt. Jody Weis To Take Hot City Council Hot Seat
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chicago is the Second City in nickname and the third in population, but when it comes to murder, the city has the dubious distinction of being second to no city in America.
As CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports, the Chicago Sun-Times pointed out on Friday that Chicago has seen 426 homicides this year through Tuesday, compared with 417 in New York and 302 in Los Angeles.
At the end of 1998, Chicago made international headlines as the U.S. "murder capital" after surpassing New York's homicide totals for the first time ever. Chicago shed that dubious distinction when murders plummeted over the last decade.
There are more than 8 million people in New York, compared to slightly under 3 million in Chicago. The population of Los Angeles exceeds that of Chicago by more than 800,000.

I agree with the first part. However, although Chicago is going to have the most murders of any US city this year, its nowhere near being as dangerous as Cleveland. Cleveland still has a higher homicide rate than Chicago. So it wouldnt really affect Cleveland in the sense that Chicago wouldnt even be in the top 30 still, Cleveland would still be 11th.

Pserge, they don't account for the number of homicides, rather the per capita rate for the city. Chicago has a lot of homicides, but per capita it is about 15 per 100,000. Compared to Youngstown of around 40 per 100,000. That is the difference with these crime rankings.
If they just accounted for the number of crimes, all the largest cities would be on top. It's not an indication of the crime and how it really affects the citizens.

I mean last year in Queens - notorious for being the worst county in NYC had 80 murders I believe last year or 62, I forget which was 2006. Queens county has a population of almost 1.5 million. Cleveland with roughly 1/3 the population had 142 last year.
