I am looking into moving from Portland, Oregon to Cleveland. Specifically, University, Shaker, and Cleveland Heights, in that order. I looked at the crime statistics and it looked like a relatively safe city. Maybe I need to look again at the source of those stats. Cleveland looks, from Google Maps, like a smaller city. Where does the crime come from - what's the source? Gang related? The neighborhoods that I mentioned above look pretty nice, large houses for a good price. Maybe a few fixer-uppers. Of course, I'm looking at realtor flyers being mailed to me.
Also, if you were a medical professional, where would you most likely live in the Cleveland area? Maybe I need to change my search.
Thanks much!

In University Hts., Shaker Hts., and Cleveland Hts., you shouldnt have to worry about crime too much. Those are all pretty safe suburbs. The Cleveland area in general has average-low crime outside of the central cities and urban areas. Cleveland city, East Cleveland, Euclid, Lorain, Elyria, etc.
Cleveland also isnt small. Although it has lost over half of its population, it was once the 5th largest city in the country. Its currently the 40th largest city in the US, with a population of 439,000. 26th largest metro area with a population of 2.1 million, Portland just passed up recently. Also Cleveland is the 15th largest CSA with a population of 2.9 million.
I suggest you look up the history of the city/area and the crime. Cleveland has a long history of high crime back past the mafia days. Cleveland was ranked the 7th most dangerous city in the country in 2006. 2007 it was named 10th, and 2008 (most recent) it was 11th. This is out of around 400 cities, so thats very bad. The crime is high for a lot of reasons. Cleveland is doing very bad economically similar to Detroit. The unemployment rate is very high, which led to Cleveland being named the #1 poorest big city in the US. It was named #1 another year, and most recently it was named 2nd poorest big city. Thats a big reason why the crime is so high. Cleveland is also one of the largest illegal drug distribution centers in the country. A lot of drugs are moved through, made, and sold here. Gangs have been a problem for years and continue to be. 90.3 WCPN ideastream® | Cleveland 7th Most Dangerous City

If I was a medical Professional I would look into the East suburbs. You would most likely be working at Cleveland Clinic or several other hospitals/Medical Centers in and right around the city of Cleveland. The suburbs that you already mentioned are good choices.

This one was very interesting: 44-year-old man fatally stabbed in Cleveland - Metro - cleveland.com
That guy that was stabbed and killed had actually stabbed and killed someone himself directly across the street in 1989.
RIP anyways. I believe thats #6 in Cleveland.

Thats 9 for Cleveland now.
By this time last year we had only had 2 homicides in Cleveland. We had a very quiet start last year though compared to average. Were at the January 17th now and have already had 9 so were doing a good amount worse. Things can change though.
