Lorain police department's undercover car firebombed

"LORAIN -- Police believe drug dealers trying to send a message of intimidation firebombed the drug unit's undercover SUV, which was parked at a location that is supposed to be a secret.

"We got the message," said Police Chief Cel Rivera. "And we're going to get the people that sent it."

The 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was parked in a location police keep secret Wednesday night when the damage occurred. The SUV was worth about $17,000, Rivera said.

Elyria woman shot in melee

"ELYRIA — A 20-year-old Elyria woman was shot Tuesday evening during a fight among about 20 people at 13th Street and Middle Avenue. A 19-year-old man was charged with the shooting.

Police said Asti Cannon was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.

Police arrested Marquel Brown of Elyria and charged him with felonious assault in connection with the shooting. In addition, police cited three people at the scene for disorderly conduct.

West Side gang members sentenced in shooting, home invasion

UPDATED at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday: CLEVELAND --- Three West Side gang members were sentenced Tuesday for crimes commited in September. Another was sentenced today.

Proecutors said the Skulls -- Israel Munson, 18, Josean Ortiz, 19, Joseph Turos Jr., 21, Barnaby Santiago, 22, Lazarus Nieves, 20, Carlos A. Santiago, 19, Daniel Santiago, 20, Cinthia Irizarry, 27, and Franclin Turcios, 21 -- went to a house in the 2900 block of Wade Avenue Sept. 1 to fight with a group of men.

They told the victims they would shoot anyone who ran. Turos pulled out a gun. The victims ran. The Skulls chased them and Turos fired the gun. A bullet grazed the right side of one victim.

Then the Skulls confronted three other men who were walking down the street. Turos pistol- whipped one of them. The victim's head was slashed open, requiring staples, prosecutor's spokesman Ryan Miday said.

Ortiz ran into the house and trashed it, while two people inside hid from him. He also threw a rock through the front window. As the gang was leaving, somene yelled "we have gas cans and your house is not going to stand," Miday said.

Daniel Santiago pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, and in an unrelated case, drug trafficking. Nieves pleaded to felonious assault. Carlos Santiago and Turcios pleaded guilty to attempted felonious assault. Their sentencing dates have not yet been set."
