I feel really torn on what to do, my wife would not have to work nearly as hard as she does now if I take this job, I love everything about the job except being so far from my family. I keep trying to tell myself it would not be that bad but I don't know.

Those people who questioned your possible move to CLE must not know the state of the economy in NC (esp. eastern NC). If you haven't received any offers in Charlotte or Raleigh, then you need to move. $80k/yr. will go MUCH FARTHER up there than it will down here in SENC. You don't tell us where in NC you live, but I grew up in NE Ohio and haved lived in Wilmington, NC for the past 15 yrs. As you know, real estate prices in coastal areas of NC have fallen. Maybe after you get established up there, you could buy a 2nd vacation home and come back for visits/vacations? I live near Wrightsville Bch and have a decent-paying gov't job here in Wilm, but believe me, if I were offered an $80k position in Cleveland, I would move back up there in a heartbeat.

I agree that the commute will be hard, but it will be the worst for your wife. She is the one who will have the hardest time of it, unless you have family nearby who will help her out on a regular basis. She will be responsible for taking care of everything during your long absences...taking care of the kids, the house, her own job, etc. She is the one you should be discussing this with, then the 2 of you together should decide about a move. Perhaps rent for 3 months or so, and see how you all handle it.

ryeager, thanks for the response, I live on the Northern Outer Banks. Great schools, very safe but not enough jobs.

There are great schools and safe areas all throughout the Cleveland metro. If that's what you're worried about you shouldn't have a problem finding somewhere nice to live.

That commute will be BRUTAL.

Consider "going all in" or "folding" (moving or not taking)

You are gonna kill yourself with the middle ground.

which is more important.

Employed now or where you live now.

It all depends on your situation. The outer banks is a nice area, but you have to go where the money is. If you can make a clean break without taking a bath on your living arrangement, I would say to do it. $80k will take you pretty far in NE Ohio. I know because I make about that much myself. I'm under 40 and own a nice suburban home, two new cars and a truck, and have enough money socked away to weather 2-3 years without a job. To me, your situation is a no-brainer. Remember, those asking why you would want to move here have likely never been here. Cleveland and its surrounding area has as much or more going on than most cities its size. We also have a decent lakefront.

And, to me, that commute would be long and ridiculous. You would have to pay $600/mo for a nice apartment + bills and then $300 every 2 weeks for a plane ticket. That's $15k per year just to hold on to a location. Do yourself a favor and take a nice $5k vacation every year and put the other $10k in the bank.

Do yourself a huge favor and don't move to Cleveland. I've lived here 19 years and have made the absolute best of it. We're desparately trying to get out and move somewhere warm. The people are super-friendly, housing is comparitively cheap, and we have beautiful summers. I would say we have nice weather (dry and warm) 3-4 months out of the whole year. There is a cloud cover which envelops the city (I read we only have 65 sunny days/year!), and most people have SAD and are vitamin D deficient. There is no growth here, just stagnation and if you care at all about style/fashion you'll be running back to NC in about 5 mins. flat!
