In my specific case, I had the chance to transfer to Cleveland from Columbus back in 2006, and would have liked to have done so. Spending the rest of my life in greater Cleveland would have been fine with me.

However, I also have an adult handicapped child to take care of. The Ohio program for significantly mentally handicapped adults is very limited, to be pretty charitable, so we chose to seek out where good programs were in place. We found an outstanding program in Sacramento, CA, so we relocated and I'll end up spending the rest of my years out here.

I still think Cleveland is great though, and wish we would have had the opportunity to have made the final move to Cleveland. Sometimes, circumstances just don't allow that to happen.
Yes, it is possible to like NE OH and not live there. You have your challenges and some have other challenges, like moving for work or school. Or maybe they want different weather, scenery, whatever. There are things that I want for my children that aren't going to be found here. I want something different for me (different climate) that I'm not going to find here. It's not Ohio's fault; it is what it is and people are who they are. One doesn't have to hate a place to leave it. Things change, people change.

Wondering if you are financially stuck in a bad place. No matter what city you are in this would not be good.
Do you need help?
Talk about missing something, you might want to re-read your own thread.

Secondly, you must feel stupid, foolish and short sighted. Because I in no way even came close to implying this? These areyour own projections of yourself!
Must you degrade other posters? Does it make you feel superior?

Here is what you wrote on a different thread:

"This is very presumptuos and so not true. I am NOT a 20 something on here relating my experience. I have lived in San Deigo Coutny for over 30 years in established neighborhoods. There is not the same kind of commitment, courtesy, stability and etiquette here as I have found to be in other places. I know there are exceptions and nothing is black and white. But, I find you can have wonderful acqaintences and very few rooted, lifelong friends."

Making new friends and meeting people in San Diego (El Cajon: home, bars) - Ca

What accounts for your lack of courtesy and etiquette? Living in California for over 30 years or growing up in Cleveland? Or is it easier to put people down on the net rather than face to face?

I was born and raised on the West Side of Cleveland. Whenever I go back to visit I can't believe how it has changed just in the last 7 years or so. Re your post about the area you are in, Slavic Village. My sister moved there a couple years ago; got a house real cheap. She spent about 5 months there top and was lucky to sell the house and leave. The area didn't appear to bad when she moved in but as a short time went by there were nothing but problems. Too bad, I use to love to go to that area when I lived in Cleveland, had alot of friends there.

Good, I'm glad that you finally see the light! Just kidding, of course. I sincerely wish you a happy journey back home when you are ready to move back. I hope that you understand that there are those who need to make their own journey to wherever their heart takes them, just like your heart is taking you back to NE OH. Wishing you a good day.

Default I Visited There

Well,

Maybe the reason that Cleveland left a nasty taste in my mouth is because I woke up a couple of months ago to men in my house with a gun to my daughters head! It gets worse from there (boiling water on my husband, pillows over our head, etc.) you get the point.

I'm a realist. This could have happened to me anywhere I live. We were thinking of moving prior to this and we just came back from FL last week to check it out. The FL blogs are negative for numerous reasons, same as the Ohio threads. You can't choose where you are born, but you can choose where you go. I personally cannot stand the winter weather, I'm tiny and I hate shoveling snow, driving in the snow, no sunlight, etc. I'm not going under the assumption that I'll be on somebody's beach sipping my favorite frozen drink watching the sunset (I'll stick with my Jack Daniels straight up!). We just like the climate better and the region fits the activities that we like. I've got a permanat golden tan already (if you know what I mean) so I wont need to sit out in the sun. We like cruising and what better place to be near that 4 major cruise ports with no airfare to pay! Hubby likes the water and maybe once in a while we'll get to enjoy it. We've got family an hour away from where we are looking so maybe once in a while we'll catch up with them too!

When we visited (See Thank you Tampa Bay for your Hospitality thread), we met some really nice people, we travelled the neighborhoods during the day and night, checked out grocery stores, housing and the job scene. Now I am worried about finding employment prior to leaving. Other than that we just need to get finances and employment together and get moving. I LOVE CLEVELAND, I wish CLEVELAND loved me more or worked out better for us. Everyone I know is either getting laid-off, taking paycuts or some sacrifice on the job end. If I'm going to deal with all this, I'd rather take my chances in a region/climate that suits me and my family. Can't blame a girl for that, right! Besides, I'm not burning any bridges here and if I can make it 32 years here, I can always come back.

Let me be the first to tell you that FL is great for a vacation. Once you live here, you are not at the beach every day, you are not tan, you are not boating/fishing/relaxing etc. It's extremely hot...burn your b***, melt your a** on the seat hot all summer into October. There are bugs the size of a small bus, and the only water you can drink you have to pay to have delivered, or buy a water system. All the houses are very similar in structure and look. Most lots are the size of a postage stamp, apartment are expensive, and the job market is horrifying. Your neighbors will be retired (you said you were 32), it's not a place to raise children with strong value systems and resources that are offered in OH, it's transient, and no one is really from here. You get no sense of community, and besides the beach areas, FL is pretty ugly as it's full of low brush and highways. Now, this is all my opinion, but truth be told (I was also born down here in FL, but raised in OH), it's a far cry from what most people think it is due to vacationing down here. We are trying to move back as we speak.

Remember that vacationing somewhere is all fun and relaxation, but when you live there are bills need to be paid, resources need to be tapped into, errands run on the weekends, work during the week is indoors and not at the beach etc...the bloom wears off the rose. Please do me a favor and visit the FL forum boards before deciding. 90% of the posts are negative, and from people looking to get out, unemployed people, and people who soon realized that what they left to come to FL wasn't so bad.

I am all for exploring and moving and experiencing different parts of the country, but I have to tell you that Cleveland is a great city, and does have a lot to offer. Depression is usually an internal issue, and not topography.

I wish you the best in your move. My husband and I are 35. We've lived in Tampa, and loved it. If I wanted to stay in FL, we'd find a way to go back to Pinellas County. I just like to tell people to be realistic b/c most folks only know FL on vacation. Everywhere is lovely when you are on vacation. If FL is right for your family, then by all means, move there. I hate that people on this board assume that any time someone leaves an area it's because they don't like it. We certainly aren't leaving FL b/c we don't like it...we love it. However, living here, with children, is very different. We no longer get to enjoy the things we like. I am not tan, as I don't like to bake myself. But, I enjoy the beach. We get there maybe a handful of times a year, which would be the same amount of days if we vacationed here. We have a pool in the backyard, but due to having an infant, and a full time job, I'm in it rarely. I can no longer lounge on the raft all day. Boating is our passion, but there is no time. I could go on and on. So, with that said, we still love FL, but want to raise our children in Cleve. I want more museums, diversity, community, good schools, culture and all the things that FL doesn't offer. I'm not saying it's better; just better for us.
I'm sorry to hear your horrible story. Where in Cleveland do you reside? That must have been awful, and would leave a nasty taste in anyone's mouth.
The thing is...FL does pay a lot less than Cleve. for jobs, but hey, there is no income tax. Just be ready to pay between 2500 and 4000 per year in insurance. Make sure you budget for it.
We just sold our house here in FL in a week, and made money (not a lot, but still). We just want to go "home". Best of luck to you in your endeavors.

Nickmast is on a distinguished road
We, my wife and I, are considering relocating to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. With my wife out of work and not being able to find a job quickly, it really puts a strain on everything in our lives. Sure we could tough it out for a while until she finds another job but with the ridiculously low pay in the Cleveland area, it would probably suit us to move anyways. The only thing that makes us want to stay is that both of us have most of our family here. It's sad that the economy is basically pushing us out of the state in hopes to find a better, more comfortable way of living.
