Very underrated place
Cleveland is a great city! The area offers alot and is much more cosmopolitan then people think. Great museums, great sports experience (CAVs, Browns, Indians) & good schools and universities. I am not a Cleveland fan yet, but I enjoy taking in games. The inner ring suburbs (CH, SH & UH) are wonderful. When my friends from back east come they are SUPRISED by the look and feel of the heights. They could not believe that the "Cleveland" area had wonderful neighborhoods with such charm. They could not believe that they could go from the airport to the corner of my block via mass transit in Cleveland. We enjoy taking in the free concerts on Wade Oval Wednesdays with out fighting large crowds. The winters suck, but the other 3 seasons are wonderful! I am from Jersey so I miss the Jersey Shore during the summer. I wish Lake Erie had more beaches, boardwalks, etc. Stuff to do for the day! WE ARE STAYING IN CLEVELAND AND TELLING OTHERS BACK EAST ABOUT THE AREA!

Do you live in CH, SH or UH? I grew up in SH, and can not say enough great things about it. Fabulous area! Mentor Headlands is a nice beach, and the boating scene is good. I agree that some of the old time beaches need to be revitilized, and offer more. I'll write the local gov if you do!
I live in FL right now, and my DH is from RI. We are in process of getting ducks in a row to come back up. Looking at SH again. Great deals to be had these days! My DH will miss the ocean too, but knows it's just as good on vacation!

Fairport Harbor is also another great beach up that way in Lake County. But you're right, the Cleveland area has miles of beautiful shoreline that is underutilized. This is the fault of local politicians, who are pretty much to blame for all of the other ills facing the region. The area has a ton going for it, but it could be so much better if we had better leadership. Of course Cleveland has bad weather in the winter, but so do Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, New York, etc. Those cities do just fine because they've got their "stuff" together. Cleveland is great now, but it, too, can be like those places if we can get it together, too.

One of the key components of a great city is positive population growth.
Cleveland and Cuyahoga county has negative growth and it's been this way longer than I care to remember. Can you show me any credible statistics that backup your opinion?

Florence, Italy has been one of the best cities in the world for quite some time. In 1971, its population was almost 458,000. In 2001, its population was about 356,000. I don't think anyone would argue that Florence wasn't a great city even while its population was in decline.

FL has a positive population influx, and it doesn't help the area. Perhaps with some improvements, Cleveland wouldn't have a population decline either. Local government sometimes creates the problem, and forces the negative decline in population. NYC was a pithole dump until Guiliani, but it always offered the same things as it does now. Poor politics are never good for an area. Thriving areas (aside from overall economy) are overseen by visionaries who don't rely on stats.

I so agree. Cleveland is much more cosmopolitan than people think. I live in So. Cal right now and I have had people ask me if I grew up on a farm. When I first moved out here, I thought I was in the stix! It was much more rural and backwards here!

HOW TRUE! I lived in So Cal. Having lived all over the country, most thought I had cows in my yard or corn fields where I played. I live near Naples currently (where everyone thinks they have the best shopping), and I'll tell you that I find more unique, classy, hard-to-find, trendy, upscale, discount, odds and ends all over Cleve. The restaurants are fantastic compared to all the chains we have here. The symphony is great (albeit we lost the ballet), sports (you learn to appreciate even your bad teams when you have NO TEAMS in town) diversity, culture, community, arts, science, park systems, the lake etc. It's a great town that gets an unwarranted bad wrap. Heinen's is the best standard grocery store I've come across (that is excluding trendy shops) for quality and selection. The city is planned very well in terms of accessibility and commute. Just too many things I find that are positives to mention.

We live in Shaker Heights! I do miss going to the Jersey Shore and getting some pizza and walking the boardwalk in Seaside Heights or hitting the bars in Asbury Park. There are only 2 things that I can say I do not like about the Cleveland area is 1. The snow. 2. Downtown. With that, they do any OUTSTANDING JOB clearing the snow in Shaker. WOW! Downtown is moving in the right direction and when are kids get out of school we are heading to the warehouse district!
