You're nuts. Cedar/Cedar Hill/Fairmount is plenty safe. Avon is a frickin' haul for someone going to CSU. Why don't you just tell them to live in Fairlawn while you're at it?

North Olmsted is great if you are looking for convenience, affordability and a good quality of education. Restaurants, shopping and transportation is nearby. Homes are reasonable for the area and neighborhoods are friendly and well-kept. The school district recently was awarded the status of Excellent with Distinction. However, I am a bit biased; I have lived here for 30 years!
I will also take this opportunity to offer a shameless plug. I have a well-maintained condominium as rental property available with 2BR and 1 BA in North Olmsted as well. If anyone reading this thread is interested, please feel free to contact me.

Which West or South suburbs to avoid?
I've gotten so many good recommendations for places on the West or South that maybe I should be asking: are there any I should avoid? I only care about those that are about 12-14 miles and further out from downtown. I don't want to start a flame war, but what communities are declining, which are having other problems that would affect safety, house value or convenience? Are any seeing big increases in property taxes? Could a new highway going in disrupt a community? This is the stuff I'm looking for.
Thanks, Lou

The Westside has a lot of character and areas like Lakewood, West Park, Rocky River, Fairview, etc are minutes from your job.

A lot of posters on here sound like paranoid suburbanites who are sheltered and afraid of anywhere close to the city. Or maybe homers hyping up where they live.
Here is a list of areas that are ghetto:
The entire east side within city limits except University Circle, Little Italy, Shaker Square, and maybe parts North Collinwood and the asian area on the near east side.
The City of East Cleveland
most of Maple Heights
Warrensville Heights
The Clark-Fulton and Stockyards areas on the west side.
Detroit Avenue from about W. 105th to W 80th
Madison Avenue from W. 65th to West Blvd
Here are ares that are declining:
Slavic Village
West Blvd Neighborhood
Euclid
Richmond Heights
Garfield Heights (at least the parts close to Cleveland & Maple Hts.)
Bedford/Bedford Heights
Areas that are a bit rough but gentrifying and becoming trendy:
Tremont
Ohio City
Detroit-Shoreway
Based on proximity I would look into Lakewood, West Park, Old Brooklyn, Parma, Seven Hills, or Independence. The last two will give you more space if you want a bigger yard, and the others more of a neighborhood feel with transit options.

Safety
Something needs to be cleared up for people not familiar with greater Cleveland. The west side of town is practically all white with the exception of the near west-side where Cleveland's Hispanic population resides and a small Arab population.
The eastside has blacks, whites, Jews, and East Asians. The east side is by far the most diverse.
I will admit that the east of the city of Cleveland is very sketchy except for a very few areas. The nice east side areas include: Shaker Square, Larchmere, Little Italy, University Circle, and North Collinwood.
So, if you are a flaming racist the city's east side and eastern suburbs are not for you.
I also want to clear up negative comments about the Bedford area. The city of Bedford is still majority white and is very safe. the Bedford City Schools consistently rate acceptably.
The student body is majority black. Also, Bedford Heights, and Oakwood Village, in the Bedford City School District, have become popular destinations for well educated upper-middle class black families.

Bedford, Ohio 44146. 20 minutes from Cleveland. 30 minutes from Akron. A Kaiser health facility is located in Bedford. A very large senior community in Bedford. The administration practically caters to the older Bedford population. Good choice if you don't have kids.
