Yes very nice neighborhood, I've been there tons of times never any problems, and I have many friends that live there, also no problems. I've heard of some incidents, but probably no different than the burbs.

North of I-490 it is pretty safe and there are a lot of great things to do there (as well as being very close to downtown). South of I-490 (which most people don't think of as being Tremont anyways) is a lot more sketchy.

Its not that bad, but a lot of it is on the sketchy side.
I wouldnt recommend living there unless you are used to very urban areas and have street smarts.

Like what the people said above. Its no East Side of Cleveland but its not the greatest either. Its a mix bag of yuppies, college kids, and good residents to the known problems of living in a urban area. If the continuing changing of the area goes on, then it'll be a nice area to live in. You can say that there is alot of potential for Tremont to be a really great area, with the proximity to Downtown, Bars and Eateries around the area, the Churches, Westside Market being close by, etc. Like cle440 said, if you don't mind living in a urban area and what that brings then go ahead.

So anyone know how the mixed income development that replaced the valley view housing project in Tremont is turning out? Has it become another source of crime? Are the market rate units selling? They have done similar developments in Chicago, but on a much larger scale. Just curious to find out if it's working in Tremont.

Visiting Cleveland
My Husband and I are visitng Cleveland next month to see the rock and Roll hall of fame. We were originaaly thinking about staying downtown , but after hearing about the recent shooting on 12th st, not too thrilled with that idea.
Heard there were some decent hotels in Independence, but didn't know what that was like or if it was a hassle to drive into the city. What is the closest safe area to Downtown, I guess in the burbs?

First off, you'd be fine downtown, especially if your hotel was near an entertainment district like East 4th. The hotels in that area are the Cleveland Hyatt at the Arcade and the Residence Inn. After that you could always stay at the Intercontinental Hotel in University Circle, it's very safe there. That's the closest safe area to downtown. It's on the campus of the prestigious Cleveland Clinic hospital and is nearby all of Cleveland museums. However, if you still would want to stay in the burbs, Beachwood, Strongsville, North Olmsted, and Westlake are all by malls and have quite a few hotels. Beachwood is the area's premiere mall. Independence is also an option and then there are other hotels scattered around the burbs. You won't have any trouble driving into the city from any of these locations as long as you don't drive during rush hour, which isn't that bad to begin with. Feel free to ask anymore questions and enjoy your visit to Cleveland.

Thanks for all your input it really did help. I am hearing about how bad the crime is downtown and was a little reluctant to stay there. We were looking at the Whyndam at playhouse square. How is that area?
Ok one more question. Any suggestions for a good Italian restaurant near The rock and roll museum?
Thanks again
