Need help on places to live, fast! =(
Hey everyone, I have been reading your posts for a while on the homicide/dangers in Cleveland. I am moving BACK to Cleveland at the end of July (I used to attend CSU and lived in the dorms) and I'm trying to find somewhere to live (apartment or house). FAST. I would really prefer a complex but $400/month is my limit. I was thinking Cle. Heights, Univ. Hts., possibly Shaker Hts or Lakewood. I really didn't want to live in the suburbs and I can honestly say I believe I can "handle my own" but I really don't want to live somewhere where I would be scared to come home. (I get out of work at midnight) I was thinking of E.126 but after reading your posts I've decided against it. Thank you so much for your time everyone, any info or help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. God Bless.

people make cleveland sound like it should be banished from the map! jeez, there are plenty of safe places to live, and the four you mentioned would be fine. sure, they all have sketchy areas, but there is no Mayberry in Cleveland (or anywhere!) as far as I'm concerned. good luck!

$400/month? I think rhat is really going to limit your options. Not a lot of GREAT neighborhoods in that price range afaik. I'm certainly no expert though and may be way off...

Yes, don't be scared by anyone who says "Cleveland is impossible to live in because of the murders!"
Cleveland is a great city, with awesome and safe city neighborhoods. Check out Ohio City, Tremont, Littly Italy, and Downtown. There are a lot of warehouses being transferred into apartments and condos.

The Cleveland area (especially the city) is very cheap but even with that $400/month is pushing it. I doubt you'll be able to find anything that cheap in a decent suburb.
E126th is definitely not a good choice at all, there are much nicer areas in the city than that.
Maybe look into: Euclid, Old Brooklyn, Goodrich-Kirtland Park, Newburgh Heights, West Park. If nothing else you'll have to settle for one of the rougher areas, and being killed should be the least of your concerns there, you're much more likely to be robbed, burglarized, carjacked, etc. Don't let the murders scare you away.

$400/month will be very tough. You could pull that off with a roommate somewhere ($800 divided by two), but it's gonna be tough by yourself to find that price.
Also, at the price, you'll almost need to look for "For Rent" signs, because that price won't be advertised on the internet most likely.
BUt I did find two around downtown:
Cleveland: InTown Place Apartments $525
Heritage Suites | 2200 Prospect Avenue - Cleveland, OH 44115, Apartment Rentals on Move.com $500ish

I would search Cleveland.com under "Real Estate" and select rentals. I agree that most anywhere you're not going to be getting much for $400; you're either going to sacrifice location (a lot) or location + physical quality.
A few examples I turned up (not affiliated with any of them)
CLEVE. Hts. 1 bdrm., 3rd flr., private, quiet, Severance area. $325+ util. + dep. Ref's. req. Mark, 216-406-4263
COLLINWOOD Effc'y., 1, 2
& 3 Newly Remodeled. Sect. 8 OK SPECIAL
$325 - $675. 216-376-0789
LAKEWOOD
LIMITED TIME ONLY!
FIRST MONTH FREE!
Eff from $349
1 Bd from $449
2 Bd from $549
Heat&Water Included
216-570-8143
Apartments & Condos for Rent Listings - Page #18 - cleveland.com
Carry on with that list, it's ordered by price.
EDIT:
Economy must be dragging things down, found Shaker, Cleve Hts, Lakewood, Old Brooklyn, even Berea with small apts under $400.
