Plus, the commute from Shaker to Mayfield is rough as it's all local roads (no highways).
I disagree with some of this. The schools are still solid in Shaker. Shaker has consistently been among the top schools in Ohio in producing National Merit and National Achievement scholars (7 this year). And ranking in the top 2% of the nations high schools (Newsweek), should earn distinction.
Taxes are high (write them off). No doubt. But besides solid schools, the quality of life is unmatched. The housing stock is solid, but old. Some people like this. When Shaker was developed/planned, it was required that each house built had an architect. So each house is unique.
Regarding the commute to Mayfield Hts, if 15 minutes is too long, yes it is rough. My wife works in Landerhaven (May.H), and has no issues with the drive. She has even ridden her bike when she has the time.
But if you need a strip mall soaked city, with cookie-cutter mcmansions, by all means: Solon.
Good luck.
