Would Cleveland be a good city to pursue this? Is there a variety of pulic cable channels? Also, i would also consider club hosting. Is it a variety of urban clubs?

I have experience in radio. I also have an Associates degree in Mass Communications.

I am in St. Louis and have already touched one aspect of broadcasting (radio). The only TV options here is Anchor and i am not interested in working news unless its hip hop news.. lol

My area of expertise is Hip Hop urban.

Also, do alot of rappers/singers etc come to Cleveland? not just for concerts but just to throw parties? here in st. louis some rapper is throwing a party every weekend...no lie.

i like hearing opinions and advice.. THANKS!

I am a black female

Actually..... Yeah, this is probably a great place for you. Nice pick!!!!

There's the Flats and Warehouse district, a strong hip-hop scene, and yeah, a great town to make your way into the world. Unsure about Cable TV options, but there should be about 3 or 4 hip-hop stations in the metro area.

Also might want to look into Detroit, as well, and maybe even give Dayton's HOT 102.9 a shot (my favorite station in town. One of the two hip-hop stations we got, the other being 94.5), since my familiararity is more down that way, and you would probably have a good shot at obtaining employment there.

Hopefully more Cleveland posters will be to help you out.

I'd have to disagree with the guy above. The fact that he mentioned the Flats proves he doesn't know what he's talking about. They just demolished the entire east bank of the flats to re-build, and that won't be ton for 10 years probably. The west bank has nothing except one bar and a strip club.

The warehouse district is more targeted towards white yuppies and has more of a club/bar vibe than a "hip-hop" scene. I'd imagine that over in East Cleveland they have more of that stuff but it is a very low income area - not where rich rappers come to throw parties.

Default Cleveland/Akron/Canton market

I agree with King 23.
They are looking to rebuild the 'Flats' altho I don't think they will refer to it as the Flats anymore. Right now it is leveled. West Bank is still standing - I think all that is left is Christy's Cabaret and Shooters.
Warehouse District is ok although it seems to be filled with more bars and high end restaurants than anything.

I have a degree in Mass Media Communication as well - with a specialty in radio. 6 years ago I worked in promotions at one of the Akron area radio stations. I didn't stick with it because I really didn't foresee any money or progression in the field and I didn't feel like being a nomad looking for a better radio market elsewhere (I don't have the patience). I can't speak for the TV world, but of what I know of the radio market in the Cleveland/Akron/Canton DMA, I wouldnt be too quick to set your sights on it. We have the 'Ohio Center for Broadcasting' located in Independence that is always churning out new broadcasting grads. University of Akron also has a relatively successful broadcasting program, including ZTV and WZIP (which is where my degree is from). I'm thinking the market around here is still going to be pretty heavily saturated with more grads than jobs - even since I graduated (Im 29 now).

If you are still interested or want to try, Z107.9 in the Cleveland market would be the best route to go for urban/hip-hop radio. They are owned by the Radio One, Inc. group. Z107.9 Blazin' Hip-Hop and R&B
The only other related station in this area is WZAK 93.1FM. They are also owned by Radio One but I don't really think they rank high on the Arbitron charts. 93.1 Cleveland's R&B Leader (http://www.931wzak.com/home.asp - broken link)
AQH listeners are going to be higher for Z107.9. I know that no one else will understand what I'm saying but I think you will lol
As for TV...well, I dunno. We have WEWS (Ch.5), WOIO (CH.19), WKYC (Ch.3) and WJW (Fox 8 News). Those are the main TV stations in the Cleveland/Akron market.

BTW, no one could pay me enough to work in the Detroit market. At any job.
And if I were to choose a hip-hop station to work at, I would choose Z107.9. They are the best around here (I'm a listener as well).

Default Cleveland

Oh - and I don't believe there are any rap artists seeking out Cleveland to have parties. I could be wrong in that respect (and I know I'm going to get reemed for this from others) but there is nothing outlandishly spectacular enough to warrant celebrities/tons of people wanting to be here. The Flats used to be a cool place to go before they razed it all, but by no means is Cleveland a 'destination area'.

You are welcome
As for Detroit, the economy is killing anything that is left of that place. It's not a matter of disliking the place or anything - I just think that it's in a worse position than Cleveland. Plus, if I was going to move to another city, I would move to Pittsburgh. But, I don't think my job is in high demand, so I'm staying put right now.
