I remember! I was 6. That storm took half of our house on Beachview Drive in Willoughby!
I was 5 at the time. we were having a backyard party at our house in Berea when it hit. People were still coming over in the deluge power outtage and all. The next day we went to the Metroparks off of Bagley and Nobottom Rd. checking out the damage!!!
I never join these forums, but this has brought back such a flood of memories, I simply had to. Born & raised in University Heights, then Lyndhurst, I moved to Los Angeles in '91 but I'll always be a Clevelander at heart. I remember almost everything that's been posted here.
A few more: Anyone remember Chi Chi's (one of the first Mexican restaurants in the Cleveland area that wasn't a "Taco Bell" type of place).
Bernie Schulman's?
Cedar Center (with the original Corky & Lenny's, and in later years the Pewter Mug?)
May Company on Warrensville (when it still had an enormous parking lot before all those ancillary stores came in?)
Davis Bakery
Scotts 5 & 10
several people mentioned the storms of 7/4/69. I was only an infant but my parents still talk about that. But I DO remember the Blizzard of '78!
WGAR when it was still a top-40 station on 1220-AM?
The Giant Slide near Mayfield and SOM Center across from Golden Gate? (closed in the late '70s I believe)
Fisher Fazios?
Loparo's Pizza?
Singapore restaurant?
China Gate?
Summer days at Mentor Headlands (my CA friends still can't believe that yes, we had great beaches in Ohio that truly rival many of the ones here in S. Calif!)
How about Channel 61's different incarnations? When it was WKBF and featured that character named "The Ghoul" (not "Ghoulardi, but a Ghoulardi rip-off), who introduced Three Stooges shorts? (similar vein as Superhost would become later on). Then became WCLQ (which was a subscription pay-service in the nighttime hours)? Then a home shopping network? Now, I am told, it's Spanish Univision.
malleys chocolate has the best homeade hot fudge!!!still 2 scoops of ice cream and the little pitcher of fudge for .99. Does anyone remember the 2 old guys that had the morning show in cleveland ?one guys name was Del Donahue but i cant remember the other guys name..Tom maybe...
Yes, that early Cleveland AM show. Tom Haley was the name of Del Donahue's (or was it Donahoo?) partner.
Wow...this is great! Grew up in Shaker..so somethings will probably be close to the East side.
Nelsons Ledges
Arabica Coffehouse
Sledding down Thorton Park Hills
Hough Bakery and their B-day cakes
Geauga Lake (Big Dipper, little antique cars, Raging Wolf, etc.)
Draeger's Peppermint Stick ice cream
WMMS
Sand's deli and the large cow tongue in the case when you walked in.
Taking the Rapid to the Terminal Tower to see the X-mas light displays
Higbees
When Randall Park mall was "classy"
Hot Dog on a Stick, and their bright yellow and blue outfits
Mentor headlands
Shah Nah Nah
Captain Kangaroo
Fireworks at Blossom...laying in the grass on the big blankets
Wow...I know I'm forgetting things..but this was a great thread
Yes, we used to take the rapid downtown to see the Higbees Christmas decorations too (and ride the old wooden escalators to eat at the Silver Grille on the top floor). Anyone remember those ancient Shaker/Van Aken rapid cars that were bright yellow and orange?
...and speaking of Randall Mall----did anyone ever go up Miles road from there to shop at Value City?
The Plain Dealer
The Rapid
Dead Man's Curve
Chagrin Boulevard (an out-of-town girlfriend cracked up when she saw this, along with "Marginal Road")
Chagrin Falls
The Flats
The Goodtime III
Mister Jing-A-Ling (of a certain age)
Uncle Bill's (ditto)
Terminal Tower
The Inner Belt
Murray Hill
Shaker Square
The Morning Exchange
Dorothy Fuldheim (long deceased, but living as an institution)
The Great Lakes Brewing Co.
The West Side Market
Puritas
Bratenahl
Big Chuck and Hoollihan, Little John (sadly, Chuck Schodowski’s finally retiring, … sigh)
Ghoulardi
...and does anybody remember the Red Barn restaurant?
And speaking of 90-something year old Dorothy Fuldheim, anyone who watched the WEWS Channel 5 news in the mid '70s will trip out over this link (and even younger folks will still recognize the music and some of the faces)

Bernie Schulman's is now Marks. LOVE THAT PLACE, and I hear they still have the same hand-drawn signs.
Corkey's is still there, and still smells the same. MMMmmmmmm
Wow, Golden Gate....used to go to Value City there when I was a toddler.
Fazio's. Heinens and all the great original grocery stores. Bordonario's in Shaker was such a great small mom and pop
Everyone is making me happy and sad at the same time. I really get homesick...but I know a lot has changed. Those were the days!
