Wow, Northwood, huh? That's amazing. I missed attending Northwood by a couple of years. When I entered elementary school in '89 I believe, Northwood was no longer open as a public school. They sent my sister and I to Canterbury, which wasn't so bad. But it would have been really nice to have been able to walk two blocks to school.

Anyways, Northwood is still standing, for now, but it was just recently announced that Mizrachi, the school that had been its tenant for many years, will be moving out to Beachwood. I'll be very interested to see what happens to the property, especially considering the fact that my parents still live in the area.

Northwood was a great school. Ah the stories But I was long gone by '89 (I ain't a young'un like you) In fact when I was there, Lauree Gearity was the principal (as in the woman whom Gearity Elementary was later named after) Canterbury was a nice school school too, I knew some kids that went there as well. I hope that Northwood isn't razed, but if Mizrachi leaves, I'm not sure what will befall it. I lived on Northwood Road itself, 1/2 block away, so I saw that building every time I left the house.

(sorry, this thread must be boring to 99.99% of the folks here)

Amazing to see that McDonalds not only found a way in... but set up shop in Mawby's to boot. Oh, the indignity!
McDonald's isn't there anymore. That building is now Lemon Grass restaurant. I think it's Thai food. Lee Road is actually doing pretty well, although the proposed upscale condo plan probably isn't going to happen now (not enough interest). But CH does have a beautiful new parking garage behind the Cedar-Lee theater where the old parking lot was.

Oh, there is still a Wendy's directly across the street from Cleveland Heights High School.

The Sun Press still exists, its coverage area includes Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, University Heights, and Beachwood. It's part of the Sun Newspapers chain.

I haven't heard of the Hough Bakery, I'd assume that it's long gone.

But compare the architecture and grandeur of this building (even partially wrecked) compared with what's there now.

But despite it being sad to look it, it's still awesome that you have this pic. It does bring back memories.
I think CH-UH made a big mistake in tearing down the old Coventry, Boulevard, Fairfax, and Taylor buildings and replacing them with those ugly, "new age" monstrosities. At least they kept Roxboro, Canterbury, and I think a few others, in tact.

Severance is actually now a "power center." It has a Wal-Mart, Home Depot, a grocery store and then a few other smaller stores. In general that area has become kind of crummy.

Amazing to think that was once an incredible estate.

To be fair, those buildings were pretty but they were in very bad shape. Repairing the structures was probably too expensive, and they were a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I'll never forget when the ceiling collapsed in the auditorium of Fairfax School--or that frightening feeling when we were rushed out of the gym into the winter snow (wearing t-shirts and shorts) because of another structural emergency. Something had to be done.
