The reason they picked that location is because the Hallee Family lived in Waite Hill. In fact on Smith Rd. My great aunt & uncle lived about 4 houses down from them. The Sherwin (Williams) Family owned almost all the land on the other side of the street and had their own aminal & bird sanctuary.
The original Mr. Hallee died many years ago and Mrs. Hallee lived for a long time after. When she died the Hallee's son and his wife opened this museum in their honor.
Another person that lived in Waite Hill was that creepy Art Modell....nobody liked him. Very arrogant!

I am fairly certain the museum is the old Christmas displays from Halle's and they are only exhibited during the holidays at Lake Metroparks Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland(Hills?) on Kirtland-Chardon Road. This was the actual location of the Halle Family summer estate.

one more thing....
How about Hillside-Old Meadow milk? "Quality Check'd" (sic) Not sure that brand name was only limited to Cleveland (or Ohio) but man it was ubiquitous in Cleveland in the '70s. (I even remember their delivery milk trucks--they still had some as late as the '70s, although milk delivery was quite the anachronism by that point).
By the time I left Cleveland it was just "Hillside" and not sure if even that name exists anymore. It sure doesn't here on the west coast.

I was waiting for an opportunity to post to this thread---thanks Madras! I used to work for Cleveland Public Power from '85-'87, and I had just started working in their Meter Bureau on (I think) 17th-18th and St Clair...Slymans had the best two-fisted corned beef and roast beef sandwiches ever...and as I look down at my middle aged belly, I'd like to think that Slymans was a major supplier to same LOL

I remember that milk, along with Lockie Lee milk in the bright red/orange milk cartons. Millbrook bread was always a favorite, too; I remember in the 70's they gave away Snoopy/Peanuts stickers in the bread, and remember as a kid being very excited for my mom to bring home a new loaf.

How about Sealtest milk and ice cream? My husband's grandfather used to work for
Sealtest in R and D. He helped develop new flavors for the company and he used to bring home the results. I used to work for Oberlin Farms Dairy, on the corner of Lakewood Heights Blvd and Joslyn. They are now Dairymen's.

I just found this site!! Great memories!
I use to work for Halle Bros in the 60's!
Floorwalkers still wore carnations!
And the elevator operators wore white gloves!
Found out they make a choc malted similar to the one in Higbee's basement!!! (at Rosati's ice cream shop!
I used to stop at Higbee's before going to work or before heading on the rapid.
I miss the hustle and bustle of downtown cleveland in the 60's
My husband and I even spent our honeymoon night at the Hotel across from the old Sterling Linder Dept store!
Does anybody remember Pinky Lee and his performance on top a city bus in downtown cleveland in the 50"s????
Great times...great city...still is!!!
