I heard from many TV news, news sources, newspapers, and websites that Cleveland had 119 murders last year in the city limits, i also heard from another source that Cuyahoga County had around 160 murders last year. I was keeping up with many of the murders that happened in Cleveland last year. I dont understand why anybody would want to make Cleveland look worse than it already is. Its not too hard for anyone to believe that Cleveland had 119 murders last year because this year Cleveland has already almost passed that number.
Over the past 2 days there has been 3 more murders in Cleveland. On October 12, 2007 Cleveland had 107 murders (it said that on Cleveland.com). As of today there has been 117 murders in Cleveland. That means just 3 more murders and we pass last years total, with still 2 months left, and December being the deadliest month of the year. Those are just the true facts, im not trying to make Cleveland look bad. I love the city but it would be wrong of me and everyone else to tell people that Cleveland was some safe, nice place to live. The suburbs are relatively safe, but the city is like a warzone right now. |

^^I totally agree, Cleveland definitely isn't safe. I wonder if the 117 murdered so far includeds the two women who were killed and then had their house set on fire to cover up the murder. If it doesn't, then that means we've tied the murder rate from last year already. What a shame!

Are these murders mostly in one area of the city or throughout the city? I may be moving there in the spring of 2008. I do not want to live in a "warzone" as stated in one of the above posts. I understand every city has violent crime, is it really that bad? I want Cleveland(not suburbs) to be my home but not if it's as bad as some of these posts make it sound. I don't know that's why I'm asking for as many replies as I can get.

Most of the murders happen on the east side (St. Clair-Superior, Central, Hough, Woodland Hills, Cortlett,) and in the fat part of the triangle formed by W. 25, Lorain, and Clark on the west side (I don't think it's a coincidence that the triangle is heavily blighted and dominated by freeways and railroads.)
"Warzone" is definitely an exaggeration, but there are indeed bad parts of the city. As a Cleveland resident (westsider,) I can tell you that the best way of gauging a neighborhood's safety is by talking to residents and walking around at different times of the day. Certain neighborhoods are very safe (downtown, most of Tremont, the northern parts of Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway, all of Edgewater and Westpark.) Also, keep in mind that many of the homicides in Cleveland are drug- and gang-related, so if you keep your nose clean, you're much less likely to have a problem. Ultimately, you're the only one who knows what you consider safe, so neighborhood advice from other people, especially those who don't live there or even in the city, should be taken with a grain of salt, and you'll have to see for yourself. |

Cle440 or CTownNative, do you know how many homicides have occurred in Toledo, OH in 2007?

Last time I heard Toledo had 11 homicides, and that was in October.Last year Toledo had 35 homicides,so my guess is Toledo's number of homicides will be down this year.

Okay, the article from Cleveland.com (November 6th) says that the murder that happened today on the citys Eastside was the 118th murder this year. We still have about 2 months left in the year. As far as Cleveland being a warzone, it is a little bit exaggerated. There is gunfire in some areas of the city at all hours of the night, and even day. Ive driven through some areas of Cleveland where all the windows either have bars on them, or are boarded up.
The Eastside has more crime and looks worse than the Westside, but there are bad areas on the Westside too. I guess Toledo has only had about 11 murders so far this year, which is actually below the national average. Like askajak said, many of the homicides and crime, are drug and gang related, but thats the case in almost every city. The 4 innocent people that were killed on the 4th of July were not drug related, and neither were all those kids who got killed, or the police that got killed, and the 2 people that got killed on the westside just for playing music. |
