There was just another murder in Cleveland near East 105th St. Yesterday there was a kid shot in the head on the Eastside and last i heard he was in critical condition and possibly dead now. I have no idea what the current homicide count is now in Cleveland. All I know is that the homicide count is somewhere between 138 and 154 and either way Cleveland has now passed the 135 murders we had in 1995. So its possibly the most murders Cleveland has had in around 20 years, and also the highest murder rate in the city in 20+ years.
Does anyone know how the other big cites in Ohio are doing? I know Lorain has had 9 homicides, and East Cleveland has about 9, Youngstown about 37, Akron about 20. I have no idea where Columbus, Cincy, Toledo, Dayton are at right now. |

Toledo, I believe is still at 12 (down from 35 last year), Cincy is at around 65 which is down from a high in the 80's from last year. I believe Dayton has 25 but I am not 100 % sure on that figure. Columbus I have no idea about.

I found this site through a google search, so I'm a first-time poster.
I've followed the murders in Cleveland this year as well through the PD. I know the PD hasn't reported 147 killings throughout the year, but that number is probably right. The PD reports on some shootings that leave a person in critical, but it doesn't always update whether that person died later. Confirmed killings are around 135 for the year. But it's not out of the relm of possibility that another 15 or so people who were taken to the hospital in critical condition passed without an update in the paper. I know the 147 wasn't a county number, because the county passed the 147 mark a month ago. From what I've read, there have been about 25 murders outside the city limits. I expect when the final numbers are released it will be about 155 in the city and another 25 in the "burbs" putting the county at 170. As for a 20-year high, Cleveland won't reach that. In 1991, Cleveland had 175 murders. From 1990-93, Cleveland never dipped below 157. But per capita, it will reach at least a 20-year high. Because in the early 90s, Cleveland was still over 500,000. Now, the number is closer to 400,000. According to a 2006 census count, the city was at about 410,000. Plus, the rate is worse now because of the advances in technology. Hospitals are saving a lot more gunshot, stabbing victims now than back then, and a hell of a lot more than when Cleveland hit 333 in 1972 (or whenever it was). P.S., outside of the murder on 105th, another victim was in critical in that shooting. Plus, there was 16 year old on 93rd. That could actually be 3 more murders as I post this. It's been a bad year, and it hasn't just been confined to certain neighborhoods. I know my old neighborhood (Longmead) generally has 2-3 murders. This year, there has been at least 6. On the bright side, I believe other crimes (robbery, etc.) is down this year. That could keep Cleveland out of the top 5 in most dangerous cities in next year's reports, but it's a lock to be in the top 10 again. Even with lower robbery numbers, Cleveland is traditionally in the top 5 in robberies per capita. As for other cities, Lorain is at 9; Youngstown is at 36; Akron is at 23. I'm not sure about Canton, but I think it's around 10 (not counting the Jessie Davis case which happened in Lake Twp.). From what I've read, it's been a higher than average year there. I don't know about Elyria or Warren. |

Thanks a lot for the info I thought the murder count was around 136 also. I know that East Cleveland has had at least 8 murders so far this year not to mention all the others in the burbs. Im sure that there has been over 145 murders this year though because of all the shootings that took people to the hospital in critical condition and not to mention what they left off on the news because they couldnt keep up with all the homicides.
I think the other crimes in the city are down for a couple reasons. One, because a lot of people are scared to go outside their home and people are scared to go to the city. Two, people never call the police in the city anymore and if they do the police never show up. and Three, the police are way too busy keeping up with the homicides and investigations. So basically i dont believe crime in the city is down at all. Also a lot of people are just saying that to try and make the city look better. I love Cleveland and Ive lived around the city my whole life but the truth is the city is a rough place with a lot of crime. I live around Elyria and its only had about 3 or 4 homicides this year. |

I disagree slightly with what you said in your last post. People in Cleveland have not been reporting crimes for years. That's not a new phenomenon. Cleveland is one of the worst cities when it comes to unreported crimes. The police won't respond in a lot of cases ... IE assaults. That is probably the most under reported crime in the city. Robbery falls into that category as well, unless it's a criminal robbing another criminal, then it's not reported. And there are lot of those. But like I said, that's been going on for years.
You might be on to something about people not being out and about as much. I don't live in the city anymore, so I don't know if that's true or not. But downtown is a thriving as it has been since I was alive. The crowds have just moved from the flats to downtown... and to Lakewood. |

As for Elyria, 3-4 sounds about right. My wife's family lives in south Elyria and I know there has been a couple of killings down there this year, but not like there was the past couple of years. The cops are patrolling that area pretty heavily now, especially around South Park and Wilkes Villa. As far I as I know, the Black Panthers haven't marched down there this year. I remember in 05, the Panthers were there twice in a month because of two murders, one was a 14- or 15-year old who was shot and killed walking down Middle Ave. on his way to Gas USA.
However, I know there has been at least two murders on the southside this year. Another 1-2 around the rest of the city sounds about right. |

According to the PD, there have been 132 homicides in Cleveland and 170 in Cuyahoga County in 2007 (through yesterday.)

I agree with you that Clevelanders have not been reporting crime for years, and I wasnt sure if that was worse this year or not but I was saying that its possible. I know that there are less people walking around because I have talked to people who live in the city and a lot of people are scared to even let their kids go play in the parks anymore which is sad. 132 murders sounds a little bit low to me. When I was keeping track of the murders I got up to 137 so far so Im pretty sure its at least that high. A lot of people dont know that hundreds of people go missing every year in Cleveland, and that could mean a lot more murders actually happened in the city.
I actually grew up on the Southside of Elyria in the early 90s and it already had a bad reputation back then. They had riots there in the 70s which is rare in most cities the size of Elyria. Central and South Lorain are rough too but I think South Elyria has as much crime. I moved out of that neighborhood a while ago and now live in North Ridgeville which is a lot nicer. Last year they had a lot of people get beat up really bad and shot in South Elyria and people were scared to even walk around down there. But as far as murders I dont think its been that bad down there this year. Since there building the new high school the area from 5th to 8th street will probably improve but I dont see anything good happening to the area to the south of that. |

Not to change this to an Elyria topic. But the new school is much needed. The front part of the school is the original school that was built in the 1840s. The area around the school has always been nice because it was mostly historical houses that had to stay up to code. Speaking of that, I see they took out a complete city block of those houses on 6th (I believe). I agree, that the area south of the school has a lot of work to do. There are a lot of good people on the southside. There are still people, like my wife's parents that have lived there for more close to 40 years and care about the neighborhood. But unfortunately, a lot of people with no regard for the neighborhood are taking over. For example, the stop sign on the corner of my wife's parents house has "W30th Lorain" spray painted on it. We know who did it, it was the house down the street that is headed by a single mother with 7 kids who run around all hours of the night. They moved in from Lorain. Examples like that are sad because it's a neighborhood that could be solid. It's still mostly in tact, you don't see much abandonment, and the houses, for the most part, are in good shape.
Back to Cleveland, 132 murders seems low to me as well. If 132 is being reported than 170 in the county seems very high. I think the county (outside of Cleveland) is at 25. Not 38, like the PD numbers say. The region's 219 also seems a little high (if Cleveland is only at 132). Here are the numbers I have Cleveland (132) East Cleveland (12) Euclid (3) Parma (2) Bedford (2) Garfield Hts. (2) Bedford Hts. (1) Berea (1) North Olmsted (1) Mayfield (1) South Euclid (1) Cleveland Hts. (1) That puts the Cuyahoga burbs at 27 (the two I'm missing where in E. Cleveland, I had that city at 10). That puts the county at 159. In Lorain County Lorain (9) Elyria (4) ...That's a estimate Wellington (1) In Medina County Hinckley (1) In Geagua County I'm not aware of any. In Lake County Eastlake (1) That's the only one I'm aware of. In Summit County Akron (23) I'm sure there are a couple of more in other parts of the county, but not to my knowledge. In Stark County Canton (10) That's just a guess. Lake Twp. (2) Jessie, Chloe Davis In Ashtabula County I'm not aware of any, but Ashtabula may have 1-2. In Portage County Again, I'm not aware of any. Those numbers add up to 210. And I'm not even sure on some of the areas. ... Canton and Elyria. The numbers aren't adding up, but regardless, they are bad for this region. One more thing, is that the PD didn't count Mahoning or Trumbull counties as the "region" in the 219 report. I don't know why, they obviously counted Stark ... the article referred to the Jessie Davis case. If you count Stark, you should count Mahoning and Trumbull. Mahoning has Youngstown (36) I'm sure there are probably 3-4 more as well. Historically, between Campbell, Struther, Austintown and Boardman, you will have that many. Trumbull has Warren (5-10) that's a guess, but the city has been stuck in that range recently. In the rest of the county, Liberty, Hubbard, Girard and Niles generally account for 1-2 more. That would put the "region" around 260. Not 219. |
