I'd recommend Lakewood. Easy commutes with I-90 and the Shoreway, a walkable city with small-town feel, lots of community involvement, and IMO lower cost of living than you'll see on the east side.
Some of the nicest houses in the area (on Lake Ave) are going for below 300K:
17208 Lake Ave
17410 Lake Ave
15316 Lake Ave

I'am fine , if a suburb is literally next door to the City of Cleveland , But really Berea ? back in the day Zip code 44135 , is within the city of Cleveland , and the southern portions were in the City of Berea school
district , Long gone , Since the City of Cleveland bought out the residents
for noise control of the Airport, And The crap i hear about The City of Brooklyn, being to close to the City of Cleveland , there for " Not Good "
is again Cleveland crap , To have a surburban type commity so close
to the city center , in most places would be ,such a great place ,

300K buys a lot of house in those 2 cities and in most cities in the entire Cleveland area.
Keep in mind we have 2 top rated Childrens Hospitals in Cleveland.
Nationally Recognized as one of the very best.
University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital
And, of course, the other is the Cleveland Clinic's which is not as well known as Rainbow Babies but it's the Cleveland Clinic which is very renowned.

Probably the best recommendation if you have the money. Those are absolute steals.

Perry, Lake county, Ohio. About 45 minutes from Cleveland, but it pretty much nails exactly what you want in a small town. Great schools, too. Check it out.

I'd have to recommend you take a good look at Medina, about 30 miles south from downtown Cleveland, on I-71.

Really. Berea. Been there lately? Some very cute houses, decent school district... I mean really what suburb really has BAD schools. Roads are in good shape, a lot of small business yet close enought to all the huge suburban malls (Great Northern, South Park).
Cleveland didn't buy parts of Berea either. Even if they did.. so?
Your post wasn't real clear about what you don't like about Berea.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Bay Village. It is a gorgeous bedroom community right on the Lake and has many public parks and beaches. Bay is one of the most neighborly places I've ever been. I see almost all of neighbors out and about every day, regardless of the weather, and the place is literally crawling with kids. There is a very active early childhood PTA that helps you get connected with other Moms, and the schools are said to be wonderful. There is also a well-regarded Catholic School here in town. My kids are toddlers so I can't comment on the schools personally, but the kids seem respectful and well-dressed, and we haven't heard of a single violent anything in 5 years of living here. I have heard Bay referred to as "Mayberry" by more than one transplant. We love it.
For around $250,000-$300,000. you can get a very nice 4 bedroom that doesn't need any work. Most of the homes are older but extremely well-maintained and there are huge trees everywhere.
Oh, and the Pool is fantastic.

The City of Bay Village has good schools. And comparisons to Mayberry? I don't know about that.

Yes. Just like Mayberry.
- 98.5% White
- Crime in Bay Village (2005):
- 0 murders (0.0 per 100,000)
- 0 rapes (0.0 per 100,000)
- 0 robberies (0.0 per 100,000)
- 3 assaults (19.4 per 100,000)
- 3 burglaries (19.4 per 100,000)
- 1 larceny count (6.5 per 100,000)
- 1 auto theft (6.5 per 100,000)
- City-data.com crime index = 6.0 (higher means more crime, US average = 312.7)
City-Data crime index: 6!
I think Andy and Barney had more to do in Mayberry then Bay Village cops have to do.
O wait.. maybe that ONE registered sex offender makes it "un-Mayberry-like?"
