Information about Lorain
I'm in the process of considering a job transfer to Lorain from over on the eastern side of the state.
I just wanted to know from people who live there, how do you like it? Do you like Lorain better, or Vermilion, or Elyria or the other towns?
And how's the cost of living there? I'm not in an occupation in which I'd make a lot of money, like say maybe high $30's, low $40's. Will I be able to afford a house of some kind on that without having to feed my sons a diet of ramen noodles?
And what's the recreation like? Is there enough good stuff to do that will keep my teenaged sons out of trouble? Do the high schools have soccer teams?
Any information about your area..I'd sure like to hear it...

Hi, I was born in Lorain and have lived here all my life. Now I am moving to Warren and I can't wait! I hate Lorain. I would definitely consider Vermilion or other towns west before considering Lorain or Elyria. The cost of living here in Lorain is not too bad. To buy a decent house, you're looking around $100,000 or more, I just bought one a few years ago. I paid $116,000, and it was hard to find that, in a good neighborhood. Recreation is ok. The high schools do not offer soccer. Lorain only has 2 high schools, very crowded. They closed one about 4 years ago. Elyria only has one. Lorain schools are not very good. I have two children, and I was not impressed with the school system. I removed them and enrolled them into a school outside of the district. Thank God you have a job, because it is so hard to find a job here that pays over $6.00 an hour. What part of Lorain are you looking at? I would stay away from the South side and parts of the west side. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Vermilion, Westlake, Bay Village, Avon Lake are all great areas with great schools. Plenty of great suburbs away from Lorain. I can give you alot of towns with alot of information other than Lorain.

Avon, Avon Lake and Amherst are nice places to live that are close to Lorain. The schools are alot better too. The houses are a little more expensive, but well worth it.

Boy, I would reconsider moving to Lorain. The crime rate seems pretty high. Our local newspaper usually has some story of a shooting or stabbing going on. The other towns mentioned in your previous replies would be much better. Seems your wages will be much better than most who live here. There might be a reason why housing is cheaper in Lorain.

I know Lorain is not the best place to live, but some of the other communities around the county are great. Lorain County is going through a population growth.

Lorain "county" is growing through a population growth, not the city of Lorain. Everyone I know or talk to is planning on moving to another city or out of state. There is nothing in Lorain, like I said before, can't wait until I move! Most people that live here commute to Cleveland for better paying jobs. We have the steel mill, which lays off constantly, we had a Ford plant, but they closed. The only kind of job you can really find here is either at a store or at McDonalds. Unless you have a degree in something, but even then, most travel to other cities for better pay. They are building a lot of new housing developments and shopping centers on the west side of Lorain, but I feel Lorain needs so much more than that.

Don't Do It
Had to post becuase our family is also moving soon from southern lorain county to out of state, for a job transfer. I am so sad to go but we have done it before and Ohio will always be "home". First off Lorain has terrible schools. I'm not saying as far as teachers who don't mean well etc. I mean funding, violence in schools etc. There are usually drug busts and violent crimes reported in our newspaper at least every other day in the city of Lorain. It's just going through a tough time financially and everyone is feeling the strain. We love being close to the Lake though.
Our family lives only 8minutes south of Lorain itself but what difference. Small town feeling good schools. Your best bet as far as schools are Amherst for good rated schools but the taxes are high and the new schools are crowded. If you want a small town feel, but close to the city shoot for S.Amherst the schools are a little "country" but great staff and a safe community. Avon and Avon Lake are great as well, but high cost of living taxes etc. Elyria is not as bad as Lorain but the schools aren't that great either if you live in southern Elyria your kids can go to Midview school district which is really nice and have the benefit of lower taxes in the city. Good luck with your move.

If it wasn't for our dealership being in Lorain county, I wished I wouldn't have moved here from Akron.
Granted, our dealership has increased property taxes and other taxes not to mention all the monetary donations that have been given out to the Lorain County charities; but I don't like living out here.
I reside in Avon Lake, an enjoyable commute daily to Amherst. But still.
If anyone is looking for a very nice apartment, 2 full bath, 2 bed includeding washing/dryer in apartment let me know. I'm looking to move early and will prorate a portion of my lease.
I'm glad I found a forum like this. Never knew it existed.
