Moving to Cleveland in the Fall to attend CWRU law

Just spent the weekend up there (from Arizona) looking at apartments in the cleveland heights, shaker square, university circle area and was disappointed by how dingy, unkept or tiny most were. I'm looking for a 1br in the $600-700 range and I'm not a big fan of the LARGE apartments houses. It's also unlikely that i'll be able to visit again till I move there, so I was really hoping to secure something as a result of my trip

I did stumble across a neat, charming place above a boutique store on Larchmere. [Map location here] I'm wondering what your thoughts are in terms of safety, noise level, commute conditions in winter etc

I'm a city, urban type girl, so I'm drawn to the feel of Larchemere street...but i'm sensible to know there's more to finding a place to live that

All Thoughts/Suggestions are most appreciated

First of all, Welcome to Cleveland!

Like I tell most newcomers who are coming to University Circle, you are moving to a great cultural area of the city. Little Italy, the Musuems (FREE Art, Natural History, Botanical Gardens), Cleveland Orchestra, are all within walking distances of your classes. Not to mention Coventry and Shaker Lakes/Shaker Square are right nearby.

As for the housing situation:

Honestly, if you're gut likes that Lachmere location, I'd say go for it -- also long as you have a car for the very short commute (less than 5 min?). That particular street continues to improve with people and new businesses, so it is on the rise. Plus Shaker Square is right down the end of the block, which has resturants, a cinema, grocery store, and rail connection to downtown.

Most apts are old houses or older buildings in that part of the city, so a house is as spacious as you're going to get in these parts, which unfortunitely aren't advertised very often online.

Safety might be a problem, but it is far safer than most parts of the city. As long as you have a "sense" to you, you'll be just fine.
