My partner and I are moving to the Cleveland/Akron area this summer. I'll be attending Akron Law and she would like to enroll with Cleveland-State or Case. I grew up in Dayton, but have recently been living in Austin, TX. While visiting recently, I really liked the area of Lakewood, but that's a 45 minute commute to Akron so I'm hoping there's someplace in the middle that will be at least a little similar to that town. Basically somewhere that's a nice, maybe artsy, and safe place to live. I can't expect it to be like Yellow Springs (although that'd be nice!) but I definitely don't want to live in a town where we'll have to go back to living in the closet or something. We're looking for about a 20-30 minute commute to either town (as opposed to one of us commuting a mere 5 minutes and the other commuting 40, which would be the case if we lived in Lakewood.)

It'd also be helpful to know which towns to avoid. Thanks!

Considering your commuting restrictions you pretty much have to live off I-77, and there is nothing along that stretch exactly like what you are looking for. That area is mostly typical suburbia and undeveloped land that is part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The closest place I can think of is Peninsula. It’s a cool little village that is popular with bicyclists in the summer as an access point to the Cuyahoga Valley trails. I would not call it particularly liberal, but it does have character, independent shops, and a small village feel. The problem with Peninsula is that it would be hard to find a rental unit there.

Cuyahoga Falls, maybe? I have some gay friends who live there.

Also, the best gay club in Ohio- and maybe even the Midwest sans Chicago- is The Interbelt in Akron. Check it out if you have a chance. Bounce in Cleveland is good too, but nowhere near as good as the Interbelt.

Tremont in Cleveland also has a sizable gay population, and some parts of Ohio City, also Cleveland. Both are next to Downtown and right on the freeway access. You would be 15 min from Lakewood as well.

If you're drive is to Akron, then it would still be at least 45 min.
