We stayed at Topsail in September of 2009 and had an incident where our two teenagers were in the water and some neighbors came running to tell them to get out... right behind them.. there were two sharks.. very close to shore.. It was scary.. but no-one was hurt. We noticed sharks swimming very close to shore every day we were there after that...I am wondering if that area is more concentrated for some reason. I know they are out there.. but I saw more there than anywhere we have ever visited.
You SAW more, but they are always there.
You got that right!!
Fish got fins but they ain't got homes! Never be suprised by what fish is where. I have caught and/or seen offshore species such as baracuda, mola mola (sunfish), ballyhoo, squid, grouper and bluefin tuna up in the shallows of Bogue Sound. Heck, we even had manatees up in Pelletier Creek last year!
If they want to be. There are sharks in the ocean. Don't swim early in the morning or at dusk. Don't swim near piers. If you see a bunch of fish schooling, something may be chasing them so get out of the water.
I've seen sharks riding in the waves while on vacation at Topsail. They are always out there they just don't bother most people. Although I would definitely second not swimming by the peirs. There's fish guts getting washed in those waters 24 hrs a day.
