Hello! My family and I will be traveling to Emerald Isle in a few weeks for vacation. We will be driving from the DC area and my sister's family will be flying in from IL. We have rented a home near the beach.

I am looking for information on must-do's and see's in the area. Is there a seafood market? My nephew wants to fish. Is there a place you can rent fishing equipment? What about dining? What are the best places to go?

Thanks for any information you can give me

I can help in the fish and fishing department! The following links will take you to a seafood market, a tackle shop and a pier. All three are first class operations, friendly folks and located within a baseball throws distance from each other. I kinow two of the owners personally-All good people.

You can find info on what to do in my Emerald Isle travel guide (http://coastalnc.org/emeraldislenctravelguidecd - broken link).

Here is a list of restaurants to try.

This is a map to my current favorite restaurants.

Riverside Steak & Seafood
is my absolute favorite for a great meal of grilled grouper. They have never let us down.

Nicky's is new, but initial dinning experiences have been very good and the prices are reasonable.

T&W's is great old time NC Seafood House
, just a few miles out 58. Their flounder is pretty hard to beat. Jordan's comes close.

Fairway is a great small restaurant for lunch and dinner. They have something for everyone on the menu, and you can often escape the island crowds there.

Ballyhoo's
is great place for breakfast, crowds are minimal because they have only been doing breakfast for a few months. I also enjoy their lunch specials and their grilled grouper sandwich. They have very reasonably priced wings and beer specials on Thursday night.

Here's a suggested list of things to try at the beach.

For some more variety and local color on seafood vendors, try Clyde Phillips between the bridges at Swansboro, and Captain Sam's in Cedar Point.

Winberry's in Cedar Point is great place to get your local produce and Bogue Sound Watermelon.

There is lots of information and pictures of area attractions at this link. They will help you decide how to spend your time.

I would recommend getting Bogue Sound watermelons straight from the farm in Bogue, NC (which is on Bogue Sound!!) Guthrie Farm-It's on HWY. 24 in Cape Carteret.

Smile Just so no gets the wrong impression

Winberry's Produce stand has been growing their own watermelons for over 55 years. They are the farm.

At this point in the year, just about everything in the stand is from their fields.

When I was in today, they were just bringing in some Silver Queen corn fresh from the fields.

We have found their produce to be among the best you can find here on the Crystal Coast.

And you're close to Pine Knolls, so you can go visit the North Carolina Aquariums Home.
