I am planning a vacation for my family to this area and was thinking about either Oak Island or Bald Head to rent a house for a week, but noticed all these other beaches nearby as well(Caswell, Holden, Ocean Isle, Sunset, etc).

Out of Oak Island or Bald Head, which would you prefer and why?
If you prefer one of the others let me know as well!

Also is the water too cold in late March.. would a later month be better?

Thanks!!

Oak Island is your typical tourist beach, accessible by car and relatively cheap for summer rentals. Bald Head Island is the complete opposite, accessible only by ferry or boat, much more upscale and quiet and definately expensive.

The ocean water in March is very cold. Probably in the 50's. I don't swim in it until early May at the soonest. Most locals don't consider the water as "warm" until June.

Apples and oranges. Bald Head is hyper expensive, Oak Island is rather working class (I lived on the island so I can say that).

As you move down, actually west, the water gets clearer due to distance from Cape Fear River, but all those listed, other than Bald Head, are pretty similar.

You need to check your figures, I have never heard of ANYONE choosing between BHI and OI.

What do you mean? lol

Looks like I will bump my trip up a month at least then if the water is still a bit chilly.

Let me try this phrased a different way..

If you were to go for a week at the beach, which beach in the area would you say is the best and what month would you go in?

Thanks all. I am just trying to narrow down some choices and I could just pick something based off websites and brochures, but we all know those only show the pictures of the good stuff..lol

Cars are not allowed on Bald Head. You park your car. You ride the ferry. You need a golf cart to get around.

Bald Head is beautiful but after 2 days...there is NOTHING to do. Bring food since there is one grocery store and there aren't lots of choices for restaurants.

No fast food and no Wings!!!

Just spent a week at OI. Beautiful beach, uncrowded, quiet, and lots to do and places to eat. Plenty of beach parking. Bald Head ferry is rather pricey, and if you're bringing bags or boxes of food, I understand you pay extra for them. Also, OI has lots of parks, fishing areas, and boat ramps. And Southport is a delight. JMHO.
