We were in MB for the past 5 days and the flies were awful!!! I thought they were bad in July when it was still and very hot.
Any insight? I am going back in a couple of weeks and hope they are GONE!

I have no solution , my husband and I tried to spend some time
on Wrigthsville beach and ended up leaving after an
hour, the flies were that bad. there was a slight breeze but it
did not matter, the only savior was to jump in the water.

we had to laugh because looking up and down the beach
we could see people swatting the air with their towels.

the flies were really bad.

They were bad this weekend on Topsail Island, it was very still for the first time all summer. They didn't bother me as long as I kept moving, but they really swarmed my poor sheltie, Stephen. The wind kicked up again yesterday and they are all gone.

I was in Atlantic Beach recently, and they were relentless. What bugged me most (sorry) was that there was a girl lying 10 feet away from me with twice as much exposed skin, and they completely ignored her. My only solution was to stay in the ocean.

It's funny, they didn't bother me much, but they went after my mom. They didn't bother her little white dog, but they swarmed over my Stephen. It's the other way around with mosquitoes; I'm the one who gets bitten up.

Is this common along all southern coastal areas during the summer and fall, or is this year unusal?

The links below to the NC State University info on biting pests may help answer your question:

Biting Midges - ENT/rsc-17

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/no...ban/biting.htm

The second link is a list of biting, nuisance insects to be found in NC and along the coast. Of course, such little criters or their cousins can be found no matter where you go

Last edited by graygardener; 09-18-2010 at 08:16 AM.. Reason: Add second link

The midges, or as locals call them, "no-see-ums" or "sand fleas," are not the same. These biting flies on the beach just look like any other house fly. The bites inflicted by these flies are almost a pleasure compared to those by the midge.

Those are "ankle biters" and they'll drive you insane. Look for insect repellent that specifically says "For biting flies" as regular repellent doesn't seem to work as well. This company has some that seems to work well. DEET Insect Repellent that really works! Buggspray

They may look like a house fly but they're not a house fly. They are actually called a Stable Fly.

Stable Fly

I'm surprised that graygardener's link didn't include them because they are definately here and they are a royal pain in the you know what.
