What kind of rain gauge are you using?

Davis Vantage Pro 2. It is up to 9 inches now. Parts of downtown New Bern are being evacuated as are other portions because of high water.

The wife had to try five or six routes to get home from her job in New Bern this evening. Fortunately, our home is on "high" ground, so to speak. This is getting ridiculous.

I saw on the news Greenville is at 12 inches (and counting). Pitt County Schools were closed today and already have a delay tomorrow (which will probably turn into a closing.)

Smile Thank goodness the tide goes out

According to my rain gauge which usually matches the NOAA precipitation maps, we got 20.25 inches of rain yesterday and a total of 23.75 inches in the last four days.

Here are some pictures from yesterday, and close to the same shots this morning. In spite of all the rain, the water levels started dropping around 3 PM yesterday. The downpours didn't stop until 7:30 PM. By 9:30 PM the water from the White Oak had dropped a foot. This amount of rain would have wreaked havoc in the mountains where we used to live.

We came through the storm fine here on the banks of the White Oak.

dsobotta-That high water at the docks was caused by a wind event. The Gale Force winds pushed the waters up the creeks and rivers.

Bill,

We have seen some severe wind events pushing waters up the river, but all the rain we had in the White Oak's short drainage area at high tide also had an impact yesterday.

When they built the two Highway 24 bridges at Swansboro, it constricted the flow of the White Oak. It is one of the reasons the river is relatively shallow. Even a rain like this cannot blow some of the silt out because of the bridges slowing the flow. Of course the bridges also limit some of the push from the sounds.

Our biggest wind impact seems to be at lunar low tides when the winds are blowing straight down the river. At that same dock, water can be nearly four feet lower than it was this morning, making it a little challenging to get the boat off the lift.

I did
a YouTube Video of some of the peak winds and rain yesterday morning.

How did downtown Morehead City make out? I saw some TV clips of flooding near the shopping center. I imagine the seafood festival folks will have to hustle to get ready.

Hope it goes well.

Automated gauges are notorious for being inaccurate, sometimes wildly. Pick up a extremely accurate Cocorahs manual gauge (NWS approved) from WeatherYourWay store.

If you're into weather you might consider joining Cocorahs. It is a NON PROFIT organization that collects primarly rainfall data from volunteers like you and me. They have many, many volunteers from all 50 states. It takes 2 minutes every morning. They prefer the rainfall measurements to be taken at 7:00 but you can take them at just about any time in the morning 7 (ie: 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9). You do buy your own gauge and use of the gauge I linked to above is required. The data we collect is used by universities, colleges, the NWS and tons of other people.
