Hi there

We've been up in ObX for a month and now headed down to Crystal Coast again to look around. I'm looking for a sound front beach similar to what they have here in OBX where the water depth doesn't get too deep (for small child). Any ideas?

I already know about Shakleford Banks but am looking for something accessible by a car? I've also been to Money Island but it seemed like it dropped off suddenly?

Is there anywhere else I should check out?

Bogue Sound has some very shallow waters on the sound side of Emerald Isle. I just checked and there are 27 sound front homes for sale from Emerald Isle up through Salter Path. I suspect you could find a home with a small sandy beach in the area. I know of a couple very nice ones, but off the top of my head, I cannot remember how much soundside beach that they have.

You can often tell the depth of the water behind a home by the length of the pier to get to their boat. You can see some of that in this aerial photo.

The challenge is finding shallow water and something of a beach. There is plenty of shallow water. Most of the beach is over on the ocean side, but there are sometimes small areas of sand to go along with all the shallow water for children to play in.

The other thing is that the ocean often makes some great cuts into the beach which either get cut off from the ocean or nearly cut off. The water in these spots is usually one to two feet deep. They turn out to be wonderful safe places for young children to play.

You can often find a sound front home that is less than four or five rows from the ocean side beach.

The locations of the cuts into the beach tend to vary and move around. I have seen some great ones just to the east of the Point in Emerald Isle. Recently there was a very nice one to the west of Bogue Inlet Pier.

The beach is always changing.

If I can help you with more specifics, just send me a note, and I will try to answer your questions.

Carteret Co. does not have sound side beaches like OBX. It doesn't even have a sound like OBX. There's a big diference between Bogue Sound and Pamlico Sound. Bogue Sound probably averages 2-4 feet deep with one exception-The ICW. Pamlico Sound averages about 20 feet deep.
Carteret Co. does have miles and miles and miles of beautiful ocean side beaches.
If sound side beaches are what you are looking for you may want to check out the northen portions of Carteret and Craven county along the Neuse and Pamlico. Plenty of sandy beaches there.
Another point-Carteret County has traditionally been boater oriented. OBX has traditionally been beach comer/surf fishing oriented.

Smile There are beaches that are not on the ocean side

We enjoy a number of Carteret County beaches that are in and around the sound and Bogue Inlet.

You don't have to be on the ocean side to find a really nice beach.

dsobbotta-You've got to be kidding me with that Bogue Inlet picture, right? Now I know you would never intentionally mislead anyone into thinking Bogue Banks has beaches that you can drive to.
I suggest everyone to go to Bing, Map Quest or Google Earth satelitte images and just scan the sound side of Bogue Banks. You'll see about a grand total of zero sound side beaches.

Bill you can drive and walk to the beaches over by the Point, the water is so shallow that you can walk across the upper end of the Coast Guard Channel. In fact you can't even take a skiff through it.

I have been coming through Bogue Inlet and literally had people wading in shallow water a "Mullet's throw from my boat." The waters are changing around the point. You don't have to be in a boat to get to the Point and there is plenty of beach there that isn't directly on the ocean.

There are also a number of small beaches along the back side of Emerald Isle farther up the island. They are not big public beaches but there are small beaches behind homes.

The picture in this post was taken inside Bogue Inlet looking towards the Point. The farther you go around the backside of the Point the farther you get away from the ocean, and there are public shallow water beaches there.

By the way, the Google Earth Maps and Bing Maps are way out of date at least in the area of the Point. Any boater or surfer fisherman who regularly visits the area can attest to that.

The lady asking questions mentioned Shackleford Banks, and last time I visited there it was by boat, and I am sure there are no roads there.

It's the inlet. And after you've spent some time in Carteret County-You'll learn a lot about Bogue Inlet. You'll learn that the point will erode and accrete by 100's of yards in a relatively short period of time. One year you'll crest that access point at the point and will have the inlet a few feet away fro you. A few years later it will be a football field away. No amount of dredging or sand renopurnishment can stop it.
Let me repeat-No amount of dredging or sand renourishment will stop the movement of Bogue Inlet.
It is also a hazardous inlet. Not only does the channel move (because the inlet moves) but due to it's narrow width-The rate of current flow through the inlet tends to be stronger than normal.
This is in stark contrast to Beaufort inlet which is 1/2 mile (if not more) wide and is maintained at 50-60 feet deep. Beaufort Inlet is home to one of two state ports. Huge ships must be able to freely pass through that inlet.

Bill

Bill,

If you had taken the time to read the linked article, you would see that movement of sand is what I have written about, and that I have several years of pictures to document what is happening at the Point.

People use the shallow water beaches there on the Point and in Bogue Inlet all the time. Come on down, I will be glad to escort you around and show you people using the beaches. They are having fun and playing in the shallow water as the picture on the linked article shows.

People come to Emerald Isle to use beaches not just to boat.

I go to town meetings and listen to the plans that the town and their planners have for the Point. And when I have a question about what they are doing, I know Art, the Mayor well enough to ask him what is going on.

I walk the beaches of Emerald Isle including the Point all the time. I have several pictures including this one that I have taken of the Point that Google uses in their Google Earth.

In fact over 50 of my pictures are used by Google Earth.

I also have a picture of myself standing on the Point over 45 years ago so I think that I have been around long enough to qualify as someone who knows what happens on the Point, besides I live just a few miles from it, and visit it regularly on foot and by boat. I also fish all the time around the Point and Bogue Inlet.

If migrating sand disqualifies an area as being a beach, then I am not sure we have any beaches in the county.

The poster asked about sound side beaches. There are none on Bogue Banks. You know-that 26 mile long island in Carteret County. You keep talking about the tiny tip of the island called Bogue Inlet. And because it is an inlet it will always have migrating sand. Anyone who has attempted to build at that inlet has found that out the hard way.
But that was before your time.
Migrating sand-Yep, I know alot about it from television and video projects I've been hired to produce for the county and the state of North Carolina. Working on these projects for months at a time allowed me to do such things as sit in the office of Dr. Orin Pilkey ( James B. Duke Professor of Geology and Director of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines) and have discussed this issue for hours.
You are intentionally misleading people into thinking that Bogue Banks has sound side beaches. They do not. All you are doing is pointing people to EI where you sell real estate.
By the way-I have a picture of me from 45 years ago in South Dakota. Doesn't mean I know anything about the state.

Did you check out Manteo while you were in OBX? Quiet, just across the bridge from OBX and direct access to the sounds. Manteo has many boat launches and is a very quiet town and the best schools in Eastern NC.

My family is from Edenton, NC, so if one of your considerations is quality schools, Dare County is tops.
