The closest beach is likely
Wrightsville which is just over two hours driving from Raleigh.
If you just want to drive down and turn around and go back that might be your best choice.
If you plan to linger a while and would like to get off the Interstate for part of your journey,
Emerald Isle might be a good choice. It would probably take you 30 to 40 minutes longer.
Instead of being on the Interstate the whole way, you would drive through some nice farm country before you pass through Jacksonville. The beaches are very accessible in Emerald Isle, it is a small town area and traffic is not something we worry very much about.
These are
some pictures that I took recently on Emerald Isle at one of my favorite beaches, Third Street. It is a few miles down the island. There a great beach access at
Islander Drive just when you get on Emerald Isle. It has a large paved parking lot, a place to change, easy access to the beach.
If you end up wanting to spend the night.
The Islander is right beside the beach access and a nice place to stay.
I can recommend Mike's for breakfast or lunch, and you can check out
these restaurants as places to grab a good evening meal. The best in the area is Riverside Steak and Seafood, but Nicky's of Swansboro is also one of my favorites and less expensive. I had a great fried whole clam roll there today while my wife enjoyed some pan fried drum.
I am sure you will have fun no matter which beach you choose.
