How much is the homestead expemption? I figure I'm about $2500 ahead in property taxes, minus $400 for car registration. Home owners probably would be about a wash as I was looking in Jax vs Wil, as both in hurricane county

Homestead was $25,000.00 when we were there......think it's suppose to go up sometime in the near future. You've also got to look at what you're getting for your taxes.Personally,I think you get a whole lot more in Florida.Even if it ended up being more, you don't mind if you're getting something in return to make your life a little better.

I spent almost 11 years living in Clearwater, Outer Tampa, and Downtown Tampa and moved to North Carolina in 06 due to a job. While the job and people I work for are wonderful, I started planning on leaving within a few months of arrival. So, clearly, I suggest Tampa. Why?

1. There is no city in NC that can compare to Tampa for recreation, sports, entertainment, night life, culture. etc. Charlotte and Raleigh try...but, they are not even close.

2. The weather. Florida's warm most of the year. Even when it rains, it is not a cold rain like in NC. Even in the dog days of summer, you still have the breeze coming off the ocean. Perhaps, the OBX would come close, but refer to point 1 again.

3. Taxes. Yes, I loved not paying state tax and not having to pay taxes for my car. Plus, you do not have to have your vehicle inspected in FL like you do in NC. FL does a good job of making money off of the tourist trade that did not seem to affect me when I lived there as a resident.

4. Cost of Living. In addition to taxes, I find that my grocery costs have gone up since coming here. Things like bread, vegetables, milk, etc. all are much higher than what I paid in FL. And adult beverages are significantly higher...and why is a liter taboo here?

5. Southern Hospitality?! Apologies to the folks that really have it, but I have not seen it in the abundance I was anticipating. People are more laid back and friendly in Florida. And, in Tampa, there is not the racial tension that permeates this area.

6. Travel: Tampa is a city that gives full access to cruise ships, international flights, etc directly. No need to fly in little planes to bigger airports with your knees against your chest.

Good luck with your decision!
