I am soon to be retired and am looking for a place to settle down. I love to sail and was interested in Oriental. I stopped there briefly on business but it was not enough to get much info.
Appreciate any insight you might have on the area, housing prices, etc.
I think there are some new developments going in there, like every other town on the coast. But Oriental is THE Sailing capital of North Carolina. So that would be a big plus for you. You're a little aways away from bigger cities, but it is doable.
Oriental is the "self proclaimed" sailing capital of NC. According to locals (most of whom have moved out), after the hurricane of several years ago, most of the "real" sailors left. The northerners who came in bought the vibe and have sailboats, but sailing is not like it was 10-15 years ago. From my experience, there are ALWAYS a lot more sailboats moored, than sailing.
Having said that, Oriental is pretty cool, but it is pretty isolated. The 45+ minute drive to New Bern gets old. I would consider medical as well if I was retiring to Oriental. It is a coastal village and lacks much medical and in fact, lacks much everything. That is the charm.
There is a really cool Thanksgiving Day bike ride, and some good restaurants, but make sure you want to live 45 minutes to an hour away from significant infrastructure, 365 days a year, before you buy there. Good Luck. I think Oriental is a GREAT place to visit, just not convinced it is that great a place to live.
Stayed there for a long weekend once and was completely bored out of my mind. Personally, I would opt for New Bern and look into a boat slip in
Oriental.
