Hello, I am doing some research right now because I wanted to find out how the job market is in the Wilmington, NC area. From what I have been reading it looks pretty grim not that I am surprised with the way the economy is. Thing is I really want to move to this area in the next year or so. My parents are moving to Hampstead, NC as they are going to build a home there on property they have. I am very close to my parents and always wanted to settle down in an area that is close to them. I am getting divorced and the only kids I have are my pets. I have a job here but it is far from the dream job and the cost of living on Long Island is insane. It is the perfect time in my life to start fresh. There is nothing holding me back from heading down South. The thing is I don't want to quit any job and pick up and move only to find there is no work. I don't have to live in Wilmington but I could move to the surrounding area. Does anyone have any suggestions of areas I should add to my research list? I have an idea where I want to be (Coastal or close enough). I want to be a quick car ride away from family. I think my brothers family will end up down here as well so I can't be the only one left here. Any input, thoughts, warnings or recommedations are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I currently have been working for a commercial realestate company for the last 6+ years. Doing Administrative Assistant/ Property Management. I have learned a lot there so I would not mind applying that towards a new job.
I have a degree in Teaching but am not certified. I have worked as a Public Relations Coordinator, Assistant Manager to an Art Gallery, Teacher Assistant, Waitress. I guess I have been a jack of all trades so I would see what fields are even open and where and if I could find something that would work for me. I am 37 so all those many jobs have spread out over a long period of time. I need to get the resume update soon I see.
There are admin jobs, but a LOT of competition- especially since the college kid will often work for cheap. same for waitressing, which might tide you over but wont provide a decent livable wage, more than likely. You DEFINITELY need a strong resume and even stronger interview skills.
perhaps you could live with your folks until you find something and get on your feet?

I figured the college kids would grab up all the good waitressing gigs. Down there they probably have a lot of seasonal work which is prefect for kids in college. Same with the Admin jobs. They can hire a few of them part time and you avoid paying health insurance too. I will get my resume in top shape. I have a good family friend who writes resumes so I will have her take a look for me. Thanks for the advice. I am just trying to think of other towns or areas to expand my search. I don't have to live in Wilmington.
aside from greenville (ew LOL) wilmington will have what jobs there are. for the most part, anyways. might try keeping an eye on Craigslist maybe for some admin positions, or even the local papers.
jacksonville and MB might be possibilities, as well, especially if youre not tied to one area in particular.
Regardless, unless the job gods smile down on you in a big big way, the search will most likely take a long time.
I look to online just to feel out what is available in the area but it will be really hard to find a job without living there full time. So I will just have to find the area I want to head into and go in guns blazing and try really hard to find something. In that case I may have to wait til I have family there as I may need to camp out on the couch before getting a place. Greenville, NC or Greenville, SC? My Aunt lives in Anderson, SC and says there is a lot of big companies heading to the Greenville area there but I don't know if I was to live so far inland and away from where my parents are headed. At least I am thinking about it and researching. Thanks for the input. I hear Raleigh is nice. What are your thoughts on that area?
I beieve teaching is your best bet. I wanna say you have two years to get certified, even while teaching. If you have a 4 year degree, you could be a Professional Mentor and make like 20-25 an hour mentoring people with special needs...My wife hires people for her firm...and other firms are hiring...
