NC 101 runs from 70 in Havelock through Eastern edge of Craven County through to Carteret reconnecting with US 70 in Beaufort. Off 101 there are several communities and subdivisions along the Pamlico Sound and intracoastal waterway. For instance you have Cherry Branch, down Ferry Rd. It sits right across the sound from Minesott Beach/Arapahoe in Pamlico County. A good route to explore the area is to take 70 into MHC, turn down 24, take that to EI, take 58 down Bogue Banks to AB, cross the bridge back into MHC, turn right on 70 E going into Beaufort and turn down 101 to take you back into Havelock and through to New Bern.

If you are looking to stay in New Bern there are some nice hotels downtown on the river along the waterfront. Any of those would be nice.

As far as Hampton Inns, there's one just off US 70, but not worried by the highway, in New Bern. Come to think of it's probably your best bet. It has easy access to 70, you can shoot west on 70 and take the new 43 exit into Greenville, shoot east and cross the Neuse to go toward Pamlico County. Or just stay on 70 East to head down to the Crystal Coast.
