Our visiting family member would like to go see a lighthouse this weekend. We would be travelling from Ayden. What would be the easiest lighthouse to see at this time of year? Bonus points if ferries are not involved.

Just take HWY 64 East to OBX. The first light house you can drive right up to would be Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Or-You could go to the light house at Lake Mattamuskeet!

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is actually closer to you than Bodie Island, but once you get to Beaufort or Harkers Island or MHC you'll have to take a private ferry to get there. In addition to the lighthouse you'll have the maritime museum in Beaufort, feral horses at Shackleford Banks, Fort Macon at Atlantic beach, and the aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores (all the same general area).

HHHmmm.........And the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, the Lost Colony, Jockey's Ridge, Cape Hatteras National Seashore all of which you can drive to. Plus you can drive to the Hatteras Lighthouse or north to the Currituck Lighthouse.

Yeah, we were thinking Bodie Island also. It is my understanding that Cape Lookout is closed until April...? It says on Google maps that it's about 2:30 from G'ville to Nags Head. I've never been out there; is that fairly accurate?

If you're going in the offseason, it isn't too bad. From Columbia to Manns Harbor it is a two-lane road. So make sure you're "stocked up" before you leave Columbia. I always thought it was closer to 3hrs, but I also traveled more during the peak season.

Yeah, Bodie Island light would be about 2 1/2 hours from Greenville. Manteo's just over 2 and Oregon Inlet's about 20-ish from Manteo depending on traffic. Hatteras light is about 45 minutes or so from Bodie Island; if you made a long day of it you could hit up both. It's definitely worth visiting Hatteras to climb it, but it won't be open for another month. I got to climb Bodie a few years back before they started work on it; it's a shame they ran out of money to finish repairs. It's an amazing view.

Don't forget about rolling north to the naked Currituck Light
