Coastal towns in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties have more vacant than occupied homes, according to 2010 census figures. The census counts seasonal or temporary homes as vacant if they're not occupied on April 1.
Approx. 25 years ago Carteret County formed its Travel & development Bureau in an effort to expand the "tourist" season past 3 months (June/July/August). The effort was to expand "summer" into May and September. Since then it has expanded even more.
Yes we had a housing boom and yes we had a housing bust. But I honestly believe there were more vacant homes for a longer period of time back then than there are today.
Coastal NC is now much more of a year round location than a short summer destination as it use to be.
