As memory serves-This is a picture taken at the docks in Ocracoke circa 1985. That's me in the boat with my back towards the camera. I am interviewing Thurston Gaskill. He was in his 90's. I remember him talking about chartering with his Dad back in 1905.
This is the only picture I have found from a time and place that is very near and dear to me.
I love the camera equipment. There was no such thing as camcorders. The camera and recording devices were seperate. The tape deck weighed about 20-25 pounds. The tapes were the size of a Bible and only recorded for 20 minutes before you had to switch out.
The camera in the picture pre-dates CCD technology and was composed of vacuum tubes. Any slight bump on the camera caused the tubes to misalign and created an interesting red, green and blue halo effect. Unfortunately the viewfinder was in Black and White so you wouldn't know there was a problem until you got back to the studio & checked tape.
The camera with the "brick" battery on the back weighed somewhere around 25 pounds.
Try taking all of that "stuff" 50 miles offshore to shoot video!!
Oh yeah-The tripod in the picture is actually a surveyors tripod. It worked well in the sand and remote locations. Otherwise we'd have to lug around a 75 pound metal boat anchor of a tripod.
