Smile Southport NC Crime data

Does anyone have current info on Southport NC crime stats? All I can find is 2006 but its pretty negative. Has the area changed since then? also looks like a lot of sex offenders. We are moving to the area should we be concerned we have teens.
Any insight would be use full Thanks

I'm not sure where you looked, but the city-data site has statistics through 2009 here: http://www.city-data.com/city/Southp...-Carolina.html It shows one murder and some burglaries, which does not sound unusual.

As far as sex offenders go, there were 17 in the town of about 3200. If I were a parent, I would not be worried. I would just teach kids how to protect themselves.

I live in La. (leland) and believe when the economy was rockin a few years back things were a little more dicey- people were more footloose running around and carrying on.

Now that the party pace has slowed people, and crime have grown more conservative.

At least thats my feeling

You can follow the headlines also through the 3 local newpapers--

I keep an eye on the crime stats and it seems to me that the burgleries, property damage are focused in the same areas most of the time. Also a high proportion of DUI's but I guess people on vacation may be more prone . We've hung around in the evening and felt perfectly safe, but then we're in the well-lit, public places. Have to keep your eyes open no matter where you live.

Thank you, I am feeling a bit better but when compared to sate stats it seems pretty high.I really just wanted to get a feel for the area. I know that it is a small community and it seems strange to have such a high rating. I was thinking that maybe it was because it is a tourist area?

Now, this is just my opinion, but it is a tourist area, and it is known that there are rentals and second homes on the Island which are often empty and therefore a crime target. Not people on people crimes., but breaking and entering. So get a realtor who can steer you to the more permanent resident type neighborhoods. I love the island, but for that reason am not looking there myself, because we would like to travel during retirement and not have to over-worry about our house being broken into.
When we're there it seems ultra quiet to us even though it's the tourist season there. We're just used to much more traffic.

Check out this link: Sex Offenders Database : Jacksonville Daily News

The data is searchable by town or zip-code and it shows pictures and names of the registered sex-offenders.

17 in a town of 3200 is alot! I live in a town of 20,000 and there are only 3 sex offenders. That would definitely make me nervous too with teenagers. Agree you should always teach them how to stay safe, in groups etc but still 17 in a town of 3200 is way too many!
