I'm in the Raleigh area and I can't find any "demo days" (where the retailer puts boats in the water and invites the public to come and try) in the area.

Someone suggested I try Wilmington. The stores here will let me take a boat to the lake to demo, but that's a lot of back and forth when wanting to try multiple boats.

Are there any places in Wilmington (or elsewhere) which offer demos on the water (without me having to do the transport of boat to water)? Or, are there any stores which offer particularly wide selection?

I'm looking for a recreational sit-in kayak ~12', and as lightweight as possible.

Thanks.

I thought Great Outdoor Provision has demo days on a local lake.

In Raleigh? They don't have any more scheduled for the year.

Kayaks are going out of season. Go to them and tell them your situation. Maybe they will know of something. It is possible an employee might be able to help you out. They are great people at GOP

The Bass Pro Shops in Charlotte (Concord Mills) used to rig up a pool and let people try out selected yaks. Not worth much, a paddle or two and you were across the pool, but at least you could see that you would not turn over immediately. This was an spring deal, though, at the start of the buying season.

You might want to try a yakking club. There is a world class club in New Bern, I think Twin River Kayak Club. I feel sure that their members would let you give on a trial.

Might want to call Herring's on Topsail Island - they have a lot of kayaks and offer great expeditions and could give you good advice...I think sometimes they sell some of theirs at the end of the season...
