Hi all. I live in Fayetteville, NC. My wife found this snake sitting on our back porch. I don't know a thing about snakes and wasn't about to try and capture/kill it. We called the local animal control, but by the time he got here the snake was gone. Showed him the attached pics and he couldn't identify the type, but said it was venomous due to the diamond shaped head.
Just trying to confirm if this is correct or not. I have a 5 year old and 3 dogs and we are very hesitant to let them out back right now. I appreciate any help that anyone can provide. Thanks.
i too would say poisonous due to head shape but cant tell you what kind.
in my yard, non poisonous snakes can live (ie: rat snakes, etc) and poisonous ones must die. or be relocated. FAR FAR away from my house (and kids, and pets!)
on the UP side... snakes really are more scared of us than we are of them (believe it or not) so if you have noisy dogs.... itll probably scurry off just to get away from them.
if your yard heavily wooded? or pretty clear? it looks like i see some pretty high grass/ weeds. keep everything mowed low and cleared out and it will help with the problem.
Thanks for the responses. The woods are only about 25 feet behind my house, so I have no doubt it came from there. And yes, that high grass will be taken care of tomorrow.
I looked at that doc also and didn't see anything that resembled it in color. The guy mentioned Copperhead, but who knows?
My dogs can be loud so I'm hoping they scared it off. Just gotta keep my fingers crossed I guess. Thanks again for the help.
This is a Eastern Hog nose. Google Pictures of Eastern Hog Nose snakes. And you will see snakes of the same color and pattern. The head could look diamond shape as this is a defense for them. To yellow for copperhead. And the pattern is wrong. I pygmy rattle would have had a rattle and would not be that big. These snakes are good rat eats. So let it get your friend.

Agreed. That looks like a hog nose although I haven't seen one in person since I was a kid living in Eastover, NC.
to OP, you can also put down snake repellent or plants that snakes dont like (marigolds come to mind).
i planted some marigolds in my front garden to help protect my frogs (LOL) and i havent seen the racer that usually lives there. I presume hes found another part of the yard to frequent...
